Welcome

Welcome to the Undergraduate Scheme for Academic Studies in Education.

There are several programmes within this scheme which include the following:

  • BA/BA (Hons) Professional Development in Education
  • BA/BSc (Joint Hons) Education Studies
  • BEd/ BEd (Hons) Professional and Vocational Education

Our students are drawn from very different backgrounds, but they all share a common interest in education and training. You may be considering a career in teaching or be interested in professional development. Our course members include students who are aspiring to be teachers and those who are already engaged in teaching, supporting learning or educational management. Our tutors are all experienced teachers who also have industrial or commercial experience and continue to be involved in teacher education. We have particular expertise and research interest in a number of areas including: Assessment; Blended & eLearning; Inclusive Education; International Development; Innovative Learning and Teaching Strategies; Mentoring; and Reflective Practice.

We have strong international links and regularly provide consultancy expertise to such international development organisations as: British Council; UNESCO & The World Bank. We have recently run programmes for teacher education and professional development in such countries as: Bahrain; Bulgaria; El Salvador; Ethiopia; India; Kosovo; Russia; Tanzania; and Turkey

Our philosophical statement attempts to encapsulate our approach to learning and teaching. We state that:

"Our focus is education and its significance in the widest sense. Our purpose is to create a safe and ethical environment where we can use our differences to engage in critical and creative thinking and thoughtful action. We aspire to encourage learning through challenge, opportunity, curiosity and inspiration within a community of enquiry"

The following pages include further information about the course and the different programme handbooks and module assessments.

If you would like further information about the courses, then please check the dates for our information days and the University Open days, when we will be able to talk to you personally. Alternatively, please get in touch with me, Gill Whittaker, to talk about your ideas and plans.

I look forward to hearing from you or seeing you on the course!
