Gen Up North is a unique training programme for emerging digital creatives in the North of England. Over five weeks, nine participants will learn from industry practitioners about the digital media landscape, take part in creativity workshops and receive coaching on professional development. The programme also includes placements at Channel 4, the BBC and local digital media companies. Places will be highly competitive but if you are a recent graduate (or new to the industry) with a real talent for creating digital content, we would like you hear from you.

Guidelines

This information has been prepared by TRC media to provide you with application guidelines for our Gen Up NorthDigital Media Programme.  

What is Gen Up?

Gen Up North is TRC media's training initiative for emerging digital talent. It is designed for graduates or those new to the industry who have a real talent for creating digital content for multiplatform.

Gen Up North is a unique immersion programme which will give you an opportunity to learn from leading experts in multiplatform, games, animation, television, advertising and digital design and marketing.  The programme offers a range of expert seminars, hand-on workshops and industry placements.

What's on offer?

During this full-time, five week programme you will receive in-depth training plus hands-on experience through placements at network broadcasters and digital media companies. 
These placements are:  
  • A week at Channel 4, London
  • Five days at a digital media company – either Manchester, Leeds or Newcastle
  • A week at BBC in Scotland
  • All other seminars and workshops will be rotated around the North of England, specifically Salford, Newcastle and Leeds.

Topics for the seminars and workshops will include:

  • Digital communications and advertising overview
  • Games and animation overview
  • Television and multiplatform overview
  • Creative ideas
  • Creative pitching
  • Legal and finance
  • Professional development

You will receive a training bursary of £200 per week for the five week duration of the programme. In addition, travel and accommodation will be funded by the programme when the sessions are held in a venue other than the delegate's regional base. 

Who can apply?


Nine highly promising digital creatives will be selected to take part in Gen Up North.   Applicants living in the following regions will be eligible to apply:
  • Yorkshire
  • North East England
  • North West England

Applicants are likely to be:

individuals at an early stage in their career in the media industry; or
recent graduates looking to enter the industry.

Selection for Gen Up Northwill be highly competitive and the programme will be intensive and demanding.  

What we are looking for?

Applicants will need to demonstrate a real understanding of and passion for digital media content. We will also be looking for:

  • a broad-based general knowledge
  • a positive attitude
  • a willingness to learn
  • confidence
  • good communication skills, both verbal and written
  • an ability to take the initiative
  • an ability to deliver
  • an enquiring mind
  • a creative thinker
  • a strong work ethic
     

Applicants should demonstrate their skills and attributes in their written case for taking part in Gen Up North(details in application form).

When does Gen Up North start?

The programme runs for five weeks from Monday 24th May until Thursday 24th June 2010.

How to apply?

To be considered for Gen Up North you need to complete the application form and provide the following documents:  

  •  Your CV (including education details, any voluntary work, employment)
  •  Your written case for taking part
  •  Your completed written task (see application form).
  •  Support letter from a referee (e.g. a lecturer or former employer ) detailing why    you are an ideal candidate for this programme.

What happens next?


Selection panels will assess all applications based on the information provided and a shortlist of candidates will be drawn up to go through to the next stage of interview. Interviews for shortlisted candidates will be held in the following locations on the following dates:
  • 20 April - Manchester
  • 21 April - Leeds
  • 22 April - Newcastle
     

On completion of the interviews, nine delegates will be selected to take part in Gen Up North which launches on 24th May 2010.
