Starting a New International Chapter or Group
Getting Started.
There are two important requirements to start and an Alumni Group:
1) The willingness of several people who can take on the organisational initiative and sustain it.
2) A reasonable number of alumni of the University interested in joining the group and participating in the groups activities.
An alumni group can be formal and informal. Formal chapters are more common and most have a structured committee with different job roles, membership subscriptions, newsletter, social online network etc.
How to Start.
Contact the UK Alumni Officer and International officer for your area, apply for the role of an International Ambassador. Prepare aims and objectives of your group, i.e social, career focused, travel etc.
Develop an invite list, being as inclusive as possible, but recognising geographic boundaries and travel requirements to reach any event that you may organise. Please work with the UK Alumni Office, in regard to contact data and ensure you abide by the Data Protection Act 1998
Organise a committee, propose a structure and delegate key responsibilities. Then decide whether you are going to have a membership fee to cover expenses, guest speakers etc.
The Alumni Office has produced an indepth guide to creating alumni groups and chapters, it is compulsory you request and read this guidebook thoroughly. This guide will help you to maximise your group to its best advantage, advise you about Corporate branding rules and group management.
