We are based within the School of Built Environment & Engineering, and focus on commercial product design and development. Our courses include product design, special effects development, fashion product development and textiles.

We use teaching methods which challenge students both individually and as teams, giving them the knowledge and skills to cope in today's dynamic commercial environment.

We value our close links with industry and commerce, which are enhanced by considerable research and consultancy. This ensures the vocational relevance of our courses. Students benefit from frequent UK and international study visits, guest lectures by external speakers and the opportunity to undertake live commercial projects.

We work collaboratively with UK industry but also have international links, often based on our association with past students working in industry. Our courses have an international flavour, with strong educational links with China, Japan, France, India, Italy, Malaysia, Pakistan, Portugal, Spain and Turkey.

The University boasts some of the finest practical facilities in Europe for design technology. These facilities include our recently built Design Studio, Product Development Studio and Innovation Factory. 

We also offer support to schools and colleges, encouraging day visits and access to staff and equipment for A2 project students.
