Access to Staff Development

The University provides a wide range of in-house training programmes for its academic and administrative staff.  Our partner staff are more than welcome to participate free of any charge on the understanding that they will cover their own expenses.   (On a few occasions the University buys-in specific training and there is therefore a charge applied to all participants which would also be applied to partner staff).  Check our website during throughout the year to check what programmes are available.  (It should be noted that training programmes for administrative staff are still being developed but will be included in this calendar in due course)

Partner staff are particularly welcome to attend the Annual Learning and Teaching (ALT) Staff Conference on Thursday 5 July 2012; keep an eye on this page for information about our 2013 conference.

The University is also pleased to announce that a similar conference has tekenplace at the University's Ras al Khaimah campus in 2012.  The focus of this conference was more directly relate to teaching and learning issues associated with Transnational Education and was be provided at Ras al Khaimah in the hope that partner staff will find it more convenient to attend. Further details of the 2013 event will be available soon on the Professional Development| for Staff website.

It is appreciated that partners will rarely find it cost effective to come to the UK specifically for training events but the University hopes that  they might feel able to tailor future visits so that they coincide.

If further information or advice is required about any of the training programmes, do not hesitate to contact Sue Burkinshaw, Head of Development. (s.f.burkinshaw@bolton.ac.uk|)

The University Going Forward

During these times of recession, many Universities are having to hold back on new developments and start bringing into play very significant redundancy schemes.  The University, given the modest surplus it has been able to build up, is ahead of the game and in a relatively strong position to weather the storm.   In additional, with £20 Million already having been invested in the campus over the last five years, the University has been able to move forward with a number of significant developments.

The appointment of the Chancellor

At the summer 2010 degree ceremony, Baronness Morris of Bolton, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Lords, was officially declared the University's first Chancellor. It was an historic moment for the university, a true milestone and a mark of how far the University has progressed in recent years.  Lady Morris said: "I am overwhelmed and so proud to hold this position.  "It marries my two great loves — education and Bolton — and I cannot think of anything better."  Lady Morris received two Honorary Doctorates to mark her appointment|

Bolton One has been unveiled as the name for the town's new £30.6 million swimming pool, health and academic centre. The center brings together a special combination of facilities to improve everyone's health and fitness. Placing these facilities on one site will allow users to select their own package of services that best meets their needs. State of the art facilities will include:

  • Urgent Care Facilities;
  • Primary Care Facilities;
  • Diagnostics
  • Specialised, Community-based Treatment

Dr George Holmes, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Bolton, said: 'Bolton One will be a great asset for our students, staff and the entire town. It will also make the University of Bolton a distinctive health learning provider within the university sector. We will be working directly with our Bolton One neighbour NHS Bolton, within the primary care sphere, in a way universities have traditionally worked with hospitals.'
