Care-Leavers Scholarship Briefing Sheet 2013/14

The Care-Leavers Scholarship will be awarded to full-time U.K. undergraduate students leaving a Care background, irrespective of their financial means, who progress to a University of Bolton undergraduate Higher Education course. 

Students must have commenced a full-time undergraduate course of study at University of Bolton before September 2012. 

Amount   

£1,000 per annum

Eligibility

In order to qualify you will need to demonstrate that you are:

  • A home (UK) student paying annual tuition fees of £3,465 via tuition fee loan or self funded
  • Studying a full-time undergraduate course at University of Bolton. The Care Leavers Scholarship will be paid to first, not subsequent equivalent or lower level HE courses only.  
  • Commenced, or due to commence your course from 1st September 2009 onwards
  • A Care leaver within the last five years who has lived in a Care setting for a period of a minimum of twelve months

Payment of the Scholarship 

The Scholarship will be paid by eight monthly instalments in each academic year on the 18th of every month from November to June inclusive. Payments will be £125 per month payable direct into your bank account.

 Financial Support   

  • In addition to the financial support you receive from Student Finance England the non means tested annual Care Leavers Scholarship of £1,000 will be payable per year for the duration of your course excluding repeat years of study.
  • You can receive a financial health check with the Student Funding Advisor to ensure that you are receiving the right grants and funding
  • Receive budgeting advice and have a personal budget plan drawn up
  • If you have been resident in a Foyer Federation– you may be eligible for a specific Foyer Bursary from the Access to Learning Fund, this is an additional £1,000 annual bursary paid to full-time, Home, Undergraduate students. The bursary is not income-assessed.
  • You can also apply for support from the Access to Learning Fund and you may be eligible for a University Bursary and Scholarships.

Accommodation support   

  • We will give priority to first year care leavers when allocating Halls of Residence accommodation
  • Provide accommodation in Halls during the summer vacation period
  • Provide continued residence in Halls for subsequent years
  • Support you in your search for accommodation both during term time and during the vacation period if you do not want to move into the Halls of Residence

Additional Support, Advice and Guidance   

  • Confidential advice and support on a wide range of academic and pastoral issues from one of the Student Liaison Officers based within each school
  • Support from one of the Student Advisors in Student Services
  • Starting a course can be a challenging time, support through the application process is available from a Student Advisor.
  • Support and advice and help accessing other services in the University and the Students' Union.
