3 Ways a Supportive University Can Help Students Thrive

For many young people, making the decision to apply to university can be an exciting step on their path to completing their education. However, it can also be a daunting one as well, which is why it is vital to choose a university that offers an excellent level of student support.

University can bring with it a whole new range of challenges. Not only is it the chance to study something that you really love and help achieve your future career goals, but it is also a chance to live away from home and become more independent as well. Whilst this is exciting, being away from the support network that you have built up at home can be worrying and this is why it is really important to ensure that you select a university that is best suited to your needs and one that offers student support services should you need them.

There are a number of important things to look for when it comes getting the support you need as a university student, as we explain below.

Supporting Diversity

University populations are becoming increasingly diverse, and it is important student support services reflect this. Having good policies in place that ensure students from more diverse backgrounds are not discriminated against can help. However, there also needs to be a community that reflects the holistic cultural needs of its population in every aspect of education and student life.

Inclusivity

Student groups and societies are an important part of university life and can provide much needed safe spaces for those who are struggling to find their way. The majority of universities will have a wide range of clubs and societies available to their students ranging from sports clubs to music clubs.  Here at the University of Bolton, our eclectic range of clubs includes sports and wellness activities such as futsal, yoga, archery and boxing, to name just a few. However, specific societies to support students of different faiths or sexual orientations are always very important – especially for those individuals who are exploring their individuality and want to be around like-minded people.

Mental Health

Being away from the familiar and surrounded by strangers can be a huge step for many students and one that can have an impact on mental health. Having mental health advisors and counsellors in staff is one way in which a university can really help support students. Being able to access these services quickly and easily is vital to ensuring that individuals thrive at university. Our range of mental health and wellbeing services include mental health counsellors, and CBT therapy, and they’re easy to access should students need them.
