4 Tips for Success During Your Accountancy Degree

17/11/2021

Need help breezing through your accountancy degree? Here are our top tips for success!

Its not unusual for postgraduates studying accountancy to worry about workload, exam stress and other challenges associated with this field of studying. Accounting can be demanding, but also highly rewarding, with those at postgraduate level enjoying much higher earning potential and amazing job prospects when they graduate.

By studying the materials, taking the time to fully understand accounting principles, and working hard, you can enjoy a positive university experience at the University of Bolton! Heres how…

1. Plan for the year ahead

Passing your studies with flying colours starts with excellent preparation work. What do you learn in accounting and finance degrees at postgraduate level (or what do you expect to learn)? How are modules delivered? And which modules are best for group learning, self-study, or a mix of both?

By knowing whats ahead (and whats expected of you as a student), youll be able to prepare in the most efficient way possible.

2. Work on your organisational skills

This is important across all subject areas, but the field of accountancy demands it even more because there are a lot of balls to juggle.

Being organised is an essential requirement for finance-based roles. Developing detailed schedules adds discipline and structure to financial systems in businesses, so by nature, accountants and finance workers have to be systematised in their approach.

Adopt good organisation habits early on and you can train yourself for any future workplace. So make sure you have a diary/planner to keep on top of classes, work-based training and study group dates.

3. Get help from others

We all need support from time-to-time, and fellow students can be a great way of helping you improve your study skills. Collaboration is important in the workplace, so by working with others you can improve your ability to excel when in a team.

Not only that, but accountancy careers rely on an element of business networking. Its important to have a professional network you can use and turn to, and university is a great time to start this process.

4. Know your career path

Another way to get the most out of your studies is to apply your learnings to the area you wish to go into. If you havent thought about your chosen career path, now is a good time to do that. Consider what jobs you can get with an accounting degree, and which ones are best suited to your skills and passions.

The earlier you know what type of accountant you want to be, or what type of finance role takes your fancy, the sooner our tutors can tailor the course to fit your needs.

At the University of Bolton, our course leaders care about your personal and professional development, and will help you find your chosen path. Our dedicated Employability Team is also on hand to help you achieve your career ambitions, whatever they may be.
