English and Creative Writing, what’s the difference?

English and Creative Writing, what’s the difference?
Are you passionate about reading and stories, but not sure whether a degree in English or Creative Writing would suit you best? Find out more about what each course involves and what you’ll learn.

BA English
On our BA (Hons) English degree, you’ll explore the different genres of literature including drama, poetry, fiction, non-fiction and more.

Our expert lecturers are renowned academics with an impressive portfolio of published work; they’ll take you on a journey of discussion, analysis and comparison, always trying to look at a piece of work from different perspectives to develop your critical thinking skills.

You’ll also expand your English language skills, and will learn all about meeting deadlines, communication, critical thinking and other fundamentals that employers will expect from anyone applying for jobs after graduation.

BA Creative Writing
As a BA (Hons) Creative Writing student, you’ll explore the English language and different forms of writing, all under the guidance of professional writers and academics.

As well as reading a variety of literature, you’ll be encouraged to be hands-on and experiment with different forms of writing yourself; whether that’s creative or critical.

You’ll also have the opportunity to submit work to our student-led creative magazine, the Bolton Review, as well as join magazine, poetry competitions and other fiction prizes. In your final year, you’ll work towards a single piece of creative work and spend time on a placement that mirrors your preferred career.

English and Creative Writing
If you’re interested in both English literature and Creative Writing, this joint course expertly blends both disciplines. You’ll explore different genres of literature, as well as experimenting with your own writing.
