Games Art, Games Design and Games Programming; what’s the difference?

At Greater Manchester’s University of Bolton, we have three distinct Undergraduate courses to help you build on your passion for gaming; Games Art, Games Design, and Games Programming. Discover what you’ll learn in each, as well as which is best for you and your career ambitions.

BA Games Art
Develop your creative and technical art skills on a studio-based course that offers highly-practical tuition. You’ll work on digital asset creation for games development, focusing on 3D modelling, texturing and lighting so you can learn to create artwork for the latest AAA games. This is an approach that’s designed to mimic the working environment found in the games industry, so you’ll be ready for employment upon graduation.

BSc Games Design
This course provides a broad study of games, with an emphasis on the technical, design and innovation aspects, rather than programming. You’ll cover a broad range of topics, from content production to games analysis, as well as usability and playability testing. By the end of the degree, you’ll have a good understanding of games production and the business behind it, such as marketing and promotion.

BSc Games Programming
This technical degree will combine your talent in maths and physics, helping you become a skilled programmer. You’ll use C++, the main programming language in the games industry, throughout the course. Programming might be new to you, but you should have a good knowledge of maths, especially algebra. You’ll be guided and supported through the course as you master object orientated programming and design techniques, and learn about advanced programming data structures and algorithms for game development.
