Professor Peter Farrell

Programme Lead

Professor Peter Farrell is a Chartered Construction Manager (FCIOB), Chartered Surveyor (FRICS) and Chartered Engineer (FCABE, CEng). Also a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. My duties at the University include the role of programme leader for the MSc Construction Project Management and MRes Engineering Management degrees. I have previously led five under-graduate university programmes, and one other MRes.

I have sixteen years of industry experience and thirty years in higher education. My industry training was in planning and quantity surveying. My post-qualification work was for eight years as a main contractor’s site manager, solely responsible for multi-million-pound new-build construction projects. I also worked in the Middle East for two years as a Chartered Quantity Surveyor, followed by a move into higher education. My Masters and PhD are both from the University of Manchester.

I supervise PhDs and act as a PhD internal and external examiner. I have successfully supervised perhaps 100 masters dissertations, and many more undergraduate research projects. My research interests are in the areas of health and safety, construction management, commercial management, procurement and pedagogical issues. I have experience as an External Examiner for both under and post-graduate at eight universities, including one delivered in the Sultanate of Oman. I am a reviewer for academic journals, conferences and books.

I have also chaired conference presentations, and act as an invited panellist in question and answer sessions. I formerly Chaired the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) Greater Manchester Branch for three years. I am now a member of the CIOB accreditation panel, and in this role, visit other universities to accredit their programmes. I have over 100 publications, including five textbooks and I have delivered papers to international peer-reviewed conferences in Australia, Singapore, Sri-Lanka, Thailand, Hong Kong, UAE, Qatar, Portugal, Czech Republic, Netherlands, Eire, Italy, USA and the UK.
