Copper, the therapy dog

Meet nine-year-old Copper, a Pets As Therapy (PAT) dog who is helping to improve mental health and wellbeing at the University of Bolton.

Japanese Akita Copper and her owner Dennis visit the university twice a month on Tuesdays and can usually be seen in Chancellor’s Mall or the Social Learning Zone.

Copper welcomes all of the attention she gets from passing students and staff and loves a fuss.

A member of the University’s Student Mental Health and Wellbeing Service is also present if a student needs specific support or just to chat.

Bookable sessions and general access sessions are available, you can reserve a session via the LEAP Live login page.

Pets As Therapy (PAT) is a national charity that enhances health and through giving people access to the companionship of an animal.

Therapeutic visits by members of the PAT team can bring comfort to students who may feel isolated and lonely, help improve their literacy and concentration in the classroom and improve mental health and well-being.

Copper on-campus

Amy Dooley, Disability Service Team Leader, and Morgan Yaguda, Wellbeing Co-ordinator, said: “University is such a busy time for students and it can be a lot of fun, but it can also be difficult to prioritise self-care and take time out amidst all the chaos.

“Copper has become increasingly popular on campus and we always have students and staff asking when she'll next be in. We have seen how these types of interactions with Copper can help build students' confidence, reduce stress and promote well-being.

“She has become the Student Mental Health and Wellbeing Services' mascot, and we're so excited she's a part of our community now.”
