Council Tax

Households where all occupants are full-time students normally don’t have to pay Council Tax. If you do get a bill, you could apply for an exemption.

Are you eligible for a Council Tax discount? To count as a full-time student, your course must:

  • last at least one year.
  • involve at least 21 hours of study per week.

You’ll get a Council Tax bill if there’s someone in your household who’s not a full-time student, but your household might still qualify for a discount. (Source: www.gov.uk/council-tax).

Do you live within Greater Manchester?

Greater Manchester Councils are: Bolton, Bury, Manchester, Oldham, Rochdale, Salford, Stockport, Tameside, Trafford and Wigan.

If you live within Greater Manchester we submit confirmation that you are a full-time student directly to your local council by sending them an electronic list. We do not need to issue a paper certificate. Please make sure that you keep your term-time address details up to date. Follow the instructions issued by your Council on how to apply to them for your exemption/discount.

Do you live outside of Greater Manchester?

Check with your council for guidance on how to apply for an exemption or discount. Students living outside the Greater Manchester area will need to request a Council Tax Certificate online to give to their Local Council. Log in to your Student Record and click on the link under the Student Services heading. Please make sure that your address details are correct before you submit your request as your certificate will be posted to you. Requests take approximately five working days to process and may be longer at busy times.
