The Biggest Feats of Civil Engineering

For thousands of years, man has been creating structures, some small, some large, but the one thing that they all have in common is the civil engineering skills that went into making them. Whether they were created in 2504 BC or 2020, many of the techniques that were used will remain roughly the same.

Many of the greatest civil engineering projects are historic icons; they are structures that showcase an incredible degree of design and vision. Every engineer will have their own opinion on which of these are the greatest civil engineering projects, but here are a few of what we believe are some of the best.

The Great Pyramid

Built in 2504 BC, The Great Pyramid, Giza, Egypt stands at 450ft high and 756ft long. As one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, the pyramid is relatively undamaged and for over 3,800 years was the tallest man-made structure in the world. Experts estimate that it would have taken around 30,000 workers over 20 years to build, using 5.5 million tonnes of limestone, 8,000 tonnes of granite and 500,000 tonnes of mortar. In today’s terms it is believed that constructing a replica of The Great Pyramid would cost around £3.5 million. When we consider that all of this was done without any of the advanced machinery that engineers have access to today, it truly is one of the biggest civil engineering projects ever undertaken.
