What jobs can you get with a computing degree?

13/10/2021

We are all doing more and more online. From playing our favourite video games and retail therapy, to staying connected with family and friends, we’re all used to using computers and smartphones!

This means that a computing degree can be extremely valuable to support your career ambitions. When you study computing and information systems, you are guaranteed to work in an exciting and fast-paced industry, with great demand for jobs.

Here are just some of the careers you can work towards when you graduate with a computing degree.

1. Cybersecurity

As the internet grows and evolves, there is an increasing risk of cybercrime. Phishing and malware scams not only put people at risk, but can cause damage to businesses too.

When you work in cybersecurity, you are helping to eliminate the risk of cybercrime. You are responsible for making systems and networks safe, as well as investigating security breaches.

2. Programming

From websites and computer games to smartphones and 3D printers, everything now runs on code!

When you work as a programmer, you develop, build and fix this code, helping to create new things and ensuring that everything runs smoothly.

You may choose to get involved in a specific type of programming or become a full-stack developer who works on a wide range of different systems.

3. Data analysis

If you have an eye for detail and feel most at ease when you’re looking at a spreadsheet, a role as a data analyst could be perfect for you.

In data analysis, you take all of the data that a system provides, assess it and put it in an easy to understand format that helps people in an organisation make decisions.

4. UX and UI development

When people visit a website, app or system, it’s essential not only be easy to navigate but to look good too.

With user experience (UX), you help people complete tasks as quickly and efficiently as possible, providing a robust customer journey. With user interface (UI), you create designs that encourage users to interact with their system of choice.

You can specialise in either UX or UI or both!

5. Teaching

Last, but no means least, a computing degree can help you teach the next generation to learn about computers and information systems.

Whether you decide to teach IT in a school, computing at your local college or offer training to computing departments, a degree will give you the valuable skills you need.
