Nomad Working - Is It Perfect For The New Breed Of Accountants?

14/04/2022

The “nomad accountant” has a certain ring to it, and it certainly moves away from the concept of the more traditional number crunching, 9-5, suit-wearing office life that is perhaps what people imagine when they are studying for an accounting degree. It’s certainly something that has become more of an option and could allow future employees to enjoy a more flexible career than ever before.

If the events of the last couple of years have taught us one big lesson it has to be that thinking outside the box is definitely possible. All of those companies who said that flexible hours and working from home wouldn’t work for their business and would mean people being less productive, they have found that actually this simply isn’t the case. In fact, research has shown that on average, performance can increase by up to 13% when people work from home across all types of roles.

Nomad Working

The Remote Office - Could you Work from Home?

Setting up a remote office for many meant having the ability to work from home occasionally but now those in accounting and finance degree jobs are finding that this is something they can do on a more permanent basis, with trips to the office becoming an occasional thing.

In fact, what has happened is a completely new breed of worker has emerged, the digital nomad, and thus the concept of nomad working has well and truly taken hold. In June 2020, when things began to open up a little during the pandemic, Barbados became one of the first countries to launch its “welcome stamp” initiative. Those in accounting and finance degree jobs, amongst others, who had the capability to earn £37,000 per annum would be welcome to live and work there for a 12-month period. In June 2021, Malta launched a similar scheme, with the proviso that applicants earned £2230 per month. Iceland also offers long-term visas for remote workers and Bermuda has a ‘Work from Bermuda’ scheme to attract nomad workers. Sri Lanka and Spain are also said to be planning similar long-term visas for remote workers.

How Does It Work?

If the idea of grabbing your accounting degree and jetting off appeals, be informed and do your research. There are usually a few legalities, like visas, to take care of first. However, once you have all of those official requirements out of the way then there really shouldn’t be anything to stop you. We have made such incredible technological advances in recent years that this, combined with the increase of Microsoft Teams and even Zoom make the idea of working from anywhere in accounting and finance degree jobs a very real option for the newer breed of tech-savvy accountants out there.
