Social Work/ Health and Social Care: Caring for those in need

Do you have a caring personality?

Although both health and social care and social work both involve caring for others, however, they are very different disciplines. For instance, health and social care refers to the process of providing healthcare support to people through hospitals, and dentists, as well as specialist support like physiotherapy, and social care support, to help people live more independent, healthier lives. A social worker is one who provides more verbal and emotional support to individuals and families, helping them live their lives more happily. Of course, in the unprecedented times we have been living in, we have seen a rise in the numbers of those needing care, whether it’s been healthcare support or mental health support.

If you’re looking for a career in a rewarding and heartfelt industry, then a health and social care course or social work course could be great career paths to investigate. Let’s look into each of these roles in more detail.

The Rise in Health and Social Care

As we know, the Coronavirus pandemic caused a huge increase in the demand for health and social care, with the NHS and other health care support workers working beyond maximum capacity. However, despite the recent return to ‘semi-normality’ following the pandemic, the demand for health and social care is set to keep increasing, with the prediction that by 2030/31, up to an extra 488,000 health care employees will be needed. order to prevent the mounting supply and demand issue; it is equivalent to a 40% increase in the workforce.

At Bolton, we recognise that health and social care are two of the most important elements of health services, from everything from early years education to end-of-life palliative care. To this extent, our health and social care courses reflect this by the fact that they are specifically designed to meet the needs of the NHS Knowledge and Skills Framework, meaning that you will learn all the latest, contemporary practices needed to excel in this challenging yet rewarding industry.

Sound interesting? To add, at the point of starting your journey with our supportive Bolton family, you will get the chance to collaborate with students who are already health and social care practitioners, and if you are already working in the profession at the point of entry to our leading Greater Manchester university, then our health and social care courses act as an excellent foundation for future career progression.

Social Workers… The UK Needs You!

Health and social care courses aren’t the only ones in high demand. Recent years have also shown that there has been increasing acknowledgement of the importance of the role of mental health. This is because suicide is currently the fourth highest cause of death among 15-29-year-olds, as mental health issues are increasingly causing young people to die prematurely. It’s vital that as a society, we spread the word about the support you can receive from NHS staff, social workers, and health care support workers about mental health.

At the University of Bolton, our social work courses provide the opportunity for our students to work in our Social Work Centre which was opened for the people of Bolton. The idea is for it to be run by students, supported by qualified professionals, providing a free service for the public; giving our students the practical experience they need to develop both their skills and confidence.

Like the idea of being part of the solution, our social work courses at Bolton would be a great career investment. Have a look at what courses we have to offer by clicking here

Mental Health Ambassadors

When it comes to the topic of health and social care and social work, it is important to consider the importance of the mental health ambassadors we have in the UK. One you may have heard of is Dr. Alex George; famous for his public stint on ITV 2’s Love Island. However, Dr Alex., originally an NHS doctor, was one who never lost sight of who he was while on the show and quickly returned to work helping to save lives and support the NHS in a tremendously challenging time. More recently too, he found himself dealing with losing his little brother to suicide. This caused him to use his profession with his large social media following to spread the word about him becoming a mental health ambassador; attempting to provide online support to those across the country who may be suffering from mental health issues.  mental health awareness
