What's it like studying business management at Bolton

Stepping Forward into the Business World

When you walk into the Institute of Management (IoM) in the morning you won’t feel like a regular student attending University. Crossing the broad expanse of flagstones that separate a modern but unassuming building from the bustling Bolton town centre, this looks like a place where business gets done.

Working towards a BSc (Hons) Business Management degree from the University of Bolton means gaining a qualification that will help take you into a lucrative and exciting career. While you study though, the clean lines and well-lit spaces of the IoM are designed to provide the perfect environment for studying and developing your business acumen.

While the outward appearance of the McCulloch Building that houses the IoM might look more like a corporate headquarters than a university facility, the staff inside will leave you in no doubt; it is a supportive learning environment. The same welcoming, inclusive atmosphere the University of Bolton provides across its campus. can also be found here. In the well-equipped study rooms, rooftop terrace, and café, there is a smile on every face, and a feeling of connection with the University of Bolton family.

Business class

“Worktown”

The story of Bolton is one of industry and regeneration. Reinvented as a hub for data processing, call centres, hi-tech electronics and IT companies from its heavy industry past, the town still retains traditional paper making and textile businesses. Bolton has always been a real working town. So much so that when British photographer, painter, and designer Humphrey Spencer was tasked with photographing the town as part of the Mass Observation Movement he gave it the code name “Worktown”.

This connection to industry is maintained today by the IoM and the way that they work with local businesses. Guest speakers from UK industries deliver masterclasses on contemporary business issues, and all successful students work towards a level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management from the Chartered Management Institute (CMI).

By focussing the course content on the needs of employers and employees entering the workplace, the institute has created a solid platform for graduates' career prospects. When you graduate with your business management bachelor’s degree, you’ll have gained first-hand experience of the workplace environments you’ll be entering. Student Satisfaction levels recorded by the National Student Survey for our business management courses are at over 80%, with the Teaching Quality*, learning opportunities and academic support among the highest rated in the UK.

Business studentCourses that Build Connections

The programmes delivered have been shaped by the advice of the University of Bolton’s Business Advisory Board to combine theory and practice in a way that connects the study experience with the local business community. You won’t necessarily find yourself working in the Bolton area after completing your course, but that doesn’t mean you can’t benefit from the industry backgrounds and contacts of our lecturers.

If you like the sound of a business management course at the University of Bolton and want to see our IoM building in person, then book a place on one of our upcoming Open Days. Speak to our dedicated lecturers and happy students; see what #UniAsItShouldBe is all about.
