Why a Career in Accounting is a Lot More Exciting Than You Might Think

When you think of accounting and accountants, you may think of people locked away in rooms, spending your day at a computer working through spreadsheets.

However, accounting is a fantastic career choice with lots of brilliant opportunities.

Here are just some of the reasons why accounting is an excellent career choice.

1. You’re helping businesses to grow

Accountants are involved in a lot of important financial decisions that can help businesses evolve and move to the next level. The work they do behind-the-scenes helps companies launch into new markets, create new products and services as well as acquire new businesses.

2. All businesses need a financial expert

All businesses handle money meaning they need someone to look after it for them. This means there is no shortage of job opportunities when you work in accounting.

You could find yourself working for a chain of national stores or restaurants, a football stadium or a record label – the possibilities are endless.

If you know about foreign currencies and international finance laws, you can even work for a business based in another country!

3. There’s lots of potential for growth

The larger the business, the vaster the financial roles and opportunities will be.

This means there is lots of scope to climb the career ladder and make a real difference to any company you work at.

The great thing about accounting and finance as a career is that the skills you learn are transferable. So, you can easily move from one business to another if a good opportunity comes your way.

If you prefer to work for yourself, you can start your own business as a freelance accountant or consultant.

4. Financially rewarding

According to Prospects, graduate accountants can start on a salary of around £25,000. Once you have gained more experience and moved into a more senior accountant role, your salary can range from £26,000 to £45,000. This means there is lots of fantastic financial rewards to accounting.

You can also take advantage of many other benefits too, such as a company car, budget for training, and membership of professional organisations.
