Bhuvana Senthilvel

Lecturer

Bhuvana was originally born and brought up from southern India. Her father was a literate and her mother was a house wife. She was the youngest of four in her family. Bhuvana had the best childhood ever. Bhuvana did her schooling from her home town and she secured 88% in her secondary school final exam. Bhuvana went on to complete her degree in Nursing which was a 4 year Bachelor programme in a well reputed C.S.I mission institution during the year 1995-1999. Followed by 1 year apprenticeship as a clinical tutor in the same institution. This enabled her to secure a job in the foundation trust as a staff nurse and clinical instructor until she arrived to England. This has been the most promising experience for Bhuvana as she had to learn and apply all the essential nursing skills to the live patients. It was very challenging and at the same time it was a good learning curve to develop as a competent nurse practitioner. This overall knowledge and experience paved her the pathway to work in UK as a staff nurse which was her proudest moment.

When Bhuvana arrived to UK, it was very daunting and challenging not just because of being away from the family for the first time this far, but also needing to understand the new language, the culture, the people and the system. Although, nursing skill remains the same everywhere, the way we deliver the care varied depending on the context you are in. Therefore, Bhuvana had to observe, listen, involve, ask, struggle, learn and perform to be a successful team leader, senior nurse, mentor, preceptor, medical devices co coordinator in the acute medical ward (12 years) in order earn value, love and respect from her fellow colleagues.

This solid experience of her nursing journey in acute ward along with her passion to teaching enabled her to look for obtaining a position in education. The starting point was the role of a clinical educator which was vital to enhance her career and made her to complete a module in PGCE. Within a year, Bhuvana stepped up to work as a Preregistration educator, where the role of teaching in clinical skills became intense and also made her to realise her hunger for teaching. This enabled her to complete PGCE. With this essential qualification, along with her teaching and learning skills to different skills mix, at different level throughout her nursing journey promoted her to achieve a lecturer job at the University of Bolton on Dec 3rd 2018 that she always desired and strived for. Now Bhuvana is all set ready to meet her responsibilities in the way it is expected to become a valued member of the team.
