APPRENTICESHIPS FUELLING PROGRESS AT NETWORK RAIL: PHILIP’S INSPIRING JOURNEY WITH THE UNIVERSITY OF BOLTON

In today’s fast-paced job market, traditional pathways to success are continually evolving. One of the most promising avenues for growth is through apprenticeships, particularly those offered at the University of Bolton.

Philip Leigh’s story serves as a compelling example of how these programmes benefit individuals and enrich the companies that invest in them. As Philip reflects on his journey through the apprenticeship programme at Network Rail, it becomes clear that this innovative approach to education is a win-win for all involved.

Let's take a closer look at Philips's journey at Network Rail and how the University of Bolton’s apprenticeship programme helped to kick-start his career.

A Leap of Faith

Philip’s journey began with a sense of scepticism about the value of formal qualifications. Having already established a successful career as a design engineer at Network Rail, he wondered if pursuing a degree in electrical engineering through the University would truly enhance his experience.

However, the opportunity to earn a degree at little to no cost was too enticing to pass up. “I thought, well, this isn’t costing anything, so I’m just going to go for it,” he recalls. Little did he know how transformative this decision would be.

The University of Bolton’s Degree Apprenticeships allow students like Philip to blend practical work experience with academic learning, ensuring they gain relevant skills while contributing to their employers’ success. This model not only enables Philip to balance his work and studies effectively but also equips him with the knowledge necessary for career advancement.

Climbing the Career Ladder

Throughout his five years at Network Rail, Philip’s hard work and dedication did not go unnoticed. He started as a design engineer and quickly seized the chance to take on an internal secondment as a senior engineer.

This experience ultimately paved the way for him to secure a permanent position as a Senior Projects Engineer. “I’ve worked my way internally up one step, I suppose, up one band,” he explains, reflecting on his progression. In his role overseeing low-voltage electrical and mechanical works on the Trans-Pennine Route Upgrade, Philip has achieved significant milestones in his career.

The Value of Education

While Philip may have initially questioned the need for a degree, his perspective shifted as he progressed through the programme at the University of Bolton. “I don’t regret for one minute doing the degree. I’m so glad I’ve done it and stuck it out,” he reflects.

It’s not just about the degree itself but about the journey—the lessons learned, the challenges overcome and the example set for his children. The University of Bolton’s emphasis on practical, hands-on learning complements this journey, allowing students to apply their theoretical knowledge directly in their workplaces.

Philip emphasises the importance of hard work and time management, noting that his mature perspective helped him navigate the challenges of balancing work, family and studies. “I found it a lot easier now as an adult because I’m probably more engaged than I would have been at 18,” he admits, underscoring the significance of maturity in the learning process.

This recognition of personal growth highlights how apprenticeships can provide not only technical skills but also invaluable life lessons.

A Smart Move for Companies

Philip’s story illustrates the immense value of apprenticeships, particularly for organisations like Network Rail. By investing in their employees' education and career growth through programmes offered by the University, companies can foster a culture of continuous learning and improvement. The benefits are reciprocal; as employees like Philip advance in their skills and qualifications, the organisation reaps the rewards of a more competent and engaged workforce.

The support offered by tutors and mentors throughout the apprenticeship process cannot be overstated. Philip highlights the assistance he received from Dr. Akram Bhatti, who provided timely feedback and encouragement. “It was just having that support there when you needed it,” he explains, pointing to the collaborative environment that apprenticeships foster.

This level of mentorship is crucial in helping students not only succeed academically but also build the confidence and skills necessary for their professional lives.

A Bright Future Ahead

As Philip looks to the future, he remains optimistic about his career path and the opportunities that lie ahead. With aspirations to achieve chartered engineering status, he understands the importance of continuous professional development. “In terms of the future, probably another two to three years at the level that I’m at now,” he notes, recognising the commitment required to elevate his career further.

The University of Bolton’s commitment to providing higher-level apprenticeships aligns seamlessly with the needs of modern businesses. By fostering a pipeline of well-trained and knowledgeable professionals, these programmes equip individuals with the tools they need to succeed in their careers while addressing the skills gap faced by many industries today.
