Every story has a heart - a pulse that keeps readers gripped from the first word to the last.
As a writer, it’s your responsibility to breathe life into your words to ensure readers remain interested. This is a challenging yet exciting part of the writing process.
In this blog, we’ll help aspiring writers to do exactly that by providing essential tips on crafting compelling stories.
At the University of Bolton, you can explore this further by taking one of our acclaimed English and Creative Writing courses.
Your best long or short stories will spring from topics you're genuinely passionate about. This passion becomes a driving force, ensuring your story carries a genuine, palpable emotion that resonates with its readers.
We recommend infusing personal experiences, beliefs, or perspectives into your narrative. This not only makes your story unique but also gives it an authenticity that's hard to replicate.
Every character has a history. This backstory shapes their motives, fears, and desires. By understanding this past, you can guide their present actions and future growth.
Characters also shouldn't remain static. Like real people, they should evolve, learn, make mistakes, and grow. This development adds depth and makes them relatable.
A setting comes alive when readers can visualise, hear, and feel it. Incorporate sensory details to paint a vivid picture, immersing readers completely.
Another piece of advice is show, don’t tell. So, instead of telling readers a room was "spooky," describe the flickering candles, the echoing footsteps, or the cold draft. Let them feel the spookiness.
Conflicts aren't just physical battles. They range from internal dilemmas to emotional struggles, societal issues, or moral challenges. They are what make stories dynamic.
As your story progresses, amplify the stakes. This not only maintains the reader’s interest but also builds up to a satisfying climax.
Plot twists are a necessity. Introduce unexpected turns to refresh the narrative, ensuring your readers remain engaged and eager to turn the next page.
At the same time, while it's essential to keep things moving, also give your readers moments to breathe and process. Balancing action with introspection is key.
Sharing your drafts with peers or writing groups provides new perspectives. They might spot inconsistencies or areas of improvement that you missed. That’s one of the great things about studying a creative writing degree at the University of Bolton; you’ll become part of a community that supports one another.
A first draft is rarely perfect. Revisit, refine, and polish your work. This iterative process hones your story to its best version.
The University of Bolton's English & Creative Writing course is your gateway to a world of compelling stories and creative work. With our supportive and inclusive environment, you're not just learning; you're growing as a writer.
