How can engineers help solve environmental problems?

We've all heard about the pressing environmental issues we face…

● Biodiversity loss

● Biodiversity loss

● Climate change

● Pollution

… to name just a few.

But did you know that engineers play a vital role in addressing these challenges?

Environmental managers can make impactful decisions about how to best manage human activities. They do this by using data about the environment, how it’s changing, and predictions about the future.

With that being said, let’s delve deeper and look at some of the different ways engineers, armed with a MRes Environmental Management Degree, can help be part of the solution.

How can engineers help solve environmental issues?

So, what challenges do we face, and how are engineers making a difference?

The energy revolution

Engineers play a pivotal role in our transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy:

Design and development

Engineers design efficient solar panels, wind turbines, and other renewable energy systems.

Integration

They're also responsible for integrating these renewable energy sources into our existing energy grid. This involves designing systems that can manage fluctuating energy inputs and ensuring reliable power delivery.

Storage solutions

Battery storage is a massive challenge in the renewable sector. Engineers develop advanced battery technologies to store energy when the sun doesn't shine, or the wind doesn't blow.

Waste management

After completing a MRes Environmental Management degree, you may get involved in designing advanced recycling systems. These are systems that are able to distinguish between different types of waste and ensure each type is processed efficiently.

Engineers can also help reduce the need for landfills while simultaneously generating power. This is by developing plants that can burn waste in a controlled manner and harness the energy released.

Water management

Turn seawater into drinking water! Engineers constantly refine desalination processes, making them more energy-efficient and affordable.

You can also design modern wastewater treatment plants. Here, advanced methods are used to remove contaminants, which turn wastewater into clean water that can be reused or returned to the environment.

Building a greener urban landscape

Or, perhaps you’ll become a civil engineer who designs sustainable city layouts. These cities can include green roofs, permeable pavements, and urban forests. These elements help absorb rainwater, reduce urban heat, and enhance biodiversity.

Material engineers are constantly researching and developing new materials with less environmental impact, from low-carbon concrete to sustainable insulation materials.
