How entrepreneurs are helping our economy

Despite recent shifting opinions on immigration and how well our economy is faring; in a new book, “Migration and Entrepreneurship in the Global Context: Case Studies, Processes and Practices (Palgrave Studies in Entrepreneurship and Society)”, Greater Manchester Business School Senior Lecturer Dr Denis Hyams-Ssekasi explains how the UK migrant population contributes positively to the UK economy and society; and a lot of that is through entrepreneurship and innovation. If you’re considering studying business to start your own company, you’re following in the footsteps of inspiring people who’ve come from all over the world to make a difference in Britain. Hearing stories like these should give you great confidence that no matter where you are from, you can be a success. (And one of the best paths to success is through entrepreneurship.)

Why business makes such a good degree

If you have high self-aspirations, a desire for self-reliance and a willingness to learn from global experience, the BSc (Hons) Entrepreneurship and Business Start-Up, BSc (Hons) Business Management or MSc Entrepreneurship and Innovation courses are perfect. In these programmes, you’ll learn how to prepare a business case, benefit from networking and develop the resilience it takes to be an entrepreneur.

Dr Hyams-Ssekasi shares, “Students who come to Bolton have high aspirations; they want to change the world. And one of the most accessible ways to do that is through entrepreneurship. You’ll learn self-reliance… not having to depend on others, companies or social services for your future and contribute to the economy by creating jobs for yourself and others. Entrepreneurship isn’t about just words. Entrepreneurs implement things. No matter who you are, you can take business theory and put it into practice.” And, with all of today’s economic worries, it’s a great choice even in a tough economy. Dr Hyams-Ssekasi explains, “Entrepreneurship is here to stay. It’s not going anywhere. It’s a recession-proof career choice. You don’t have to look for jobs out there. You can look inside, create your own job and become self-reliant.”

What you’ll learn at the Greater Manchester Business School

You won’t just gain practical skills, you’ll learn how to take that next step. We teach our Business students to be more active and take smart risks. That's because, as Dr Hyams-Ssekasi relates, “No entrepreneur succeeds without experimentation and trial and error. Don’t shy away from any idea you have - even if it's small.” An example, he shares, is a group project where students got £20 of seed money. They created a team, business plan and launched their idea within 3 months - many earning as much as £300 off that £20. When you study at Bolton, projects like this will give you the confidence to see an idea through and take that journey. You’ll also make valuable connections. It's not uncommon for outside founders, CEOs and innovators to visit the Bolton campus and view student projects and pitches; meeting our students and future innovators. So, putting your heart and soul into student projects will enable you to make a great impression with future partners and business associates in your own ventures.

“Entrepreneurship at Greater Manchester is good in my opinion due to the Module content. The Curriculum is robust and the practical workshop experiences [help] you to understand entrepreneurship in detail and its elements. It's a [stepping] stone to being a successful entrepreneur.” -Yejide Oluwafemi, Postgraduate Student, Greater Manchester Manchester Business School.
