Course Details

All healthcare professionals require clinical examination skills to carry out accurate assessments of patients of all ages and inform their healthcare journey. Caring for children and young adults in primary care is influenced by multiple complex factors and demands skilled assessment and management. This stand-alone advanced professional development course offered by the University of Bolton will help develop your clinical examination skills in babies, children and young adults.

Our expert team will guide you through taking a history in a systematic and organised way so that you can assess risk, identify normal presentations and distinguish these from abnormal findings. You’ll learn to identify red flags, undertake differential diagnosis to treat and manage these conditions, and assess the need for further detailed investigation or referral to maintain the physiological, emotional and mental wellbeing of children and young adults in your care.

We’ll support you to develop advanced communication skills and undertake remote consultations. You’ll learn to assess common systemic diseases such as asthma and dermatological conditions, and identify, manage and monitor children and young people who are at risk or failing to thrive. We’ll guide you as you learn to undertake the six-week baby check of development assessment for diagnosis and onward referral. We’ll also explore the legal, ethical and safeguarding issues involved in working with children and young adults.

You must have current professional registration as a health or social care practitioner.
You’ll also normally need to provide evidence of post-registration experience of professional practice as well as a first degree relevant to your health or social care practice.
We may also consider applicants offering recent study at Level HE6.
It is preferable for you to have current employment in a community setting or general practice to fulfil the practice element of this course.
You may be required to attend an interview and/or provide a portfolio of work.

Course fees

Home students starting this course in the first year will be required to pay a Home fee of £800 for the academic year 2024/25.

Overseas students starting this course in the first year will be required to pay a Overseas fee of £800 for the academic year 2024/25.

This advanced professional development course adopts a blended learning approach to develop your knowledge and understanding of practical examination skills. Lectures are supplemented with practical sessions where you learn the specific skills required to carry out accurate assessments of children and young adults. We offer a safe and supportive environment where you can develop your clinical examination skills under the supervision of our experienced team.

You'll develop your knowledge and understanding of practical examination skills through a blended learning approach. Lectures will be supplemented with practical sessions where you'll have the opportunity to develop the specific skills required to carry out accurate assessments of patients of all ages. The practical aspects will involve developing clinical examination skills under supervision, to allow you to develop in a safe and supportive environment. As well as lectures and tutorials, a range of web-based resources will be made available to you via Moodle, the University's virtual learning environment, to aid you in achieving the knowledge requirement identified. E-learning is also provided via Moodle to enable you to undertake further study in a place and at a time that is convenient for you. This programme adopts a blended style of learning and teaching including online delivery and engagement where appropriate.

Formative assessment will support your learning but does not contribute to your final mark. You’ll receive feedback from your tutors and peers that allows you to reflect on your progress and identify what you are doing well and where you may need extra help. Summative assessment tests your achievement of the intended learning outcomes for the course and determines your final mark. For this course, it will involve a written essay based on a given case study and a portfolio of evidence of clinical consultations undertaken, with supervision, in the workplace.
