Course Overview
This stand-alone advanced professional development course is offered by the University of Bolton through an innovative partnership with Southern Healthcare. Through a combination of online learning (70%), face-to-face teaching sessions with University of Bolton staff at Eden House in Dawlish, East Devon (30%), and supervised learning in your own place of work, this exciting course aims to build on your pre-existing knowledge of adult social care nursing and healthcare practice. We'll support you in advancing your contemporary knowledge and understanding of adult social care nursing in care home settings via the complex construction of self and utilising a Socratic Ethos directed towards thoughtful, high-quality and dynamic practice.Our dedicated team will guide you as you explore the concepts of advanced communication skills, emotional intelligence, autonomous working, holistic assessment, reflective practice and leadership and management skills whilst developing a sound working knowledge of the relevant legislation, regulation and policy which underpins nursing and care home practice. We'll help you develop practice confidence and clinical skills linked to all stages of the person's care journey.
This digitally orientated short course offers in-depth knowledge of long-term conditions associated with ageing, managing complex multiple morbidities and frailty, and recognising and caring for the deteriorating person. You'll have the opportunity to develop your knowledge, understanding and competency-based workplace and clinical skills in supporting the team, residents and their families whilst effectively collaborating with and understanding other agencies, multidisciplinary teams and services involved in enabling people to remain safe and happy within their care environment.

Entry Requirements
- Please note that this course requires you to attend in-person sessions at Eden House, 28 The Strand, Dawlish, East Devon, EX7 9PS. Please contact the programme leader for a map showing the location of Eden House and where to park (parking charges may apply).
- You must have an appropriate health and social care related qualification at level HE5 or above; for example, registered nurse, nursing associate, assistant practitioner, or allied health professional.
- You’ll be required to attend an interview and/or provide a portfolio of work.
- You must have current appropriate employment in a nursing/care home.
- You must provide proof that you've completed your employing organisation's mandatory training.
- You must have access to a practice assessor and practice supervisor in your place of work.
- This course involves regulated activity, so you must gain an Enhanced Disclosure certificate from the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) before starting your studies. Charges are payable to cover the cost of the DBS Enhanced Disclosure application and annual registration with the online Update Service. (Normally, your sponsoring organisation will organise this.)
- If English isn’t your first language, you’ll also need IELTS 6.0 with no less than 5.5 in any band (or equivalent). We also accept a range of other English language qualifications – please visit our English Language Requirements web page for more details.
- Please note that this course is subject to the University of Bolton's Fitness to Practise procedure.

Fees & Funding
Home/EU Fees
Home students starting this course in the first year will be required to pay a Home fee of £1,200 for the academic year 2024/25.
International Fees
Overseas students starting this course in the first year will be required to pay a Overseas fee of £1,200 for the academic year 2024/25.
Bursaries
Important note regarding tuition fees for the 2024-25 academic year: EU nationals who meet residency requirements (have settled or pre-settled status) may be eligible for 'Home' fee status. If you do not meet these residency requirements, overseas fees will apply. Irish citizens living in the UK or Ireland will be eligible for 'Home' fee status under the Common Travel Area arrangement. The fees for a student's course of study will be set for the normal duration of that course subject only to inflationary increases – measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI) recorded in March each year to take effect for subsequent start dates.

Teaching & Assessment
We use a blended style of teaching and learning that includes lectures, seminars, workshops, tutorials and online delivery. As well as face-to-face sessions at Eden House in Dawlish, East Devon, online discussions and activities posted on the virtual learning environment and Ed App lessons will support your learning. We'll expect you to attend all scheduled sessions and prepare for these in advance by undertaking relevant research and background reading.
Formative assessment will support your learning but does not contribute to your final mark. You'll receive feedback from your tutors and peers, allowing you to reflect on your progress and identify what you are doing well and where you may need extra help. Summative assessment will involve a written critical reflection and a practice-based professional development and clinical skills proficiency portfolio. These elements will contribute to your final mark.
