A University of Bolton District Nursing student has received a top national award.
Joanne Dawson won the Queen’s Nursing Institute’s Philip Goodeve-Docker Memorial Prize 2020 for outstanding achievement, after being nominated by the University.
Joanne, aged 36, from Bury, has been a registered nurse since 2007 and has worked in critical care, acute medicine and community nursing.
She began working in District Nursing in 2015 and initially attended the University of Bolton in 2018, completing a non-medical prescribing course.
Joanne returned in 2019 to start a Community Specialist Practitioner (CSP) District Nurse Programme.
She said: “I feel very privileged to have received this award. When I was initially informed of the nomination, I wondered whether I had read it correctly and had to check that I had not been confused with someone else!"
Joanne has now returned to the University of Bolton as a lecturer and says she “hopes to make a difference to others”.
She added: “I am very grateful that I was able to continue with my studies during the challenges and uncertainty of the pandemic.
“I found the University of Bolton a very positive environment and studying on the CSP Programme served as a reminder of the incredible influence education can have.
“I hope to be able to improve the quality of care and raise the profile of district nursing through education.”
Helen Lord RN Queen's Nurse, Senior Lecturer Programme Lead for District Nursing, at the University of Bolton, said: “We are delighted for Joanne. She demonstrated exceptionally high standards within both the academic assessment and practice assessment elements of the programme.
“We are extremely fortunate to welcome Joanne to the University staff nursing team, where I am sure she will have a very positive impact on educating our future nurses.”
Professor George E Holmes DL, President and Vice Chancellor of the University of Bolton, said: “This is another fantastic example of the amazing work of all the team in the Faculty of Health and Wellbeing. My warmest congratulations to Joanne.”
