University of Bolton, why we are the right choice
Location - Bolton, Greater Manchester
Dr. Henry Oti is a chartered engineer, registered with the Engineering Council. He began his academic journey in civil engineering at the University of Lagos in Nigeria, later obtaining an MSc in Water and Environmental Management from Loughborough University, and a PhD from the University of Nottingham. His doctoral research focused on integrating sustainability analysis into building design, culminating in the development of a BIM-integrated software system for evaluating alternative structural design solutions.
Dr. Oti joined Oxford Brookes University as a postdoctoral researcher and associate lecturer, where he worked for about four years. During this time, he contributed to notable projects, including the FutureFit Built Assets initiative and the BIM-enabled Low Impact School Procurement (BLISP) project, funded by the European Regional Development Fund and Innovate UK, respectively. As part of the BLISP project, he developed a BIM-integrated software system that visualizes energy use data to inform the design process. He further extended these concepts to align embodied energy and CO2 emissions calculations in buildings with the UK New Rules of Measurement and incorporate lessons-learned knowledge into BIM frameworks, with applications extending to nuclear decommissioning.
Internationally, Dr. Oti contributed to the CIB Task Group 90 (TG90) on information integration in construction, which developed a research roadmap for information integration in Construction. His research interests span sustainable asset development, building design optimization, and the application of building information modeling (BIM) in asset management within the built environment. Other areas include the potential of BIM in integrating emerging technologies like Big Data, Open and Linked Data, and artificial intelligence to enhance predictive decision-making in construction. He has published widely, authoring books and articles in prestigious journals and conference proceedings.
Currently, Dr. Oti teaches the Communications Technology module, which includes BIM tools, and handles BIM applications within Construction Project Management and Environmental Management. He plays a key role in the industry-based MRes programme in Environmental Management, which has graduated over 100 delegates from regions including Saudi Arabia and Africa. Dr. Oti also supervises students at undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral levels. His extensive experience in academic management includes programme accreditation, and he has been instrumental in developing/running the Civil Engineering Degree Apprenticeship programme. Previously, he served as the Academic Group Coordinator for Recruitment and Retention and currently leads the Civil Engineering programmes at the University of Bolton.
