Dr Henry Oti

Lecturer - Civil Engineering

Biography Dr Henry Oti trained as a civil engineer and has MSc in Water and Environmental Management from Loughborough University. He obtained his PhD degree from The University of Nottingham in 2014. His research was about integrating sustainability in the structural design of buildings. This culminated in the development of a BIM integrated software system for the appraisal of alternative structural design solutions. The solutions are based on the combination of sustainability parameters of life cycle costing, carbon footprint and ecological footprint. He worked as a researcher and associate lecture at Oxford Brookes University for about 4 years and contributed in delivering the FutureFit Built Assets and the BIM-enable Low Impact School Procurement (BLISP) projects respectively funded by the European Regional Development Fund and Innovate UK. As one of the outputs of the BLISP project, Henry developed a BIM-integrated software for visualising energy use data as feedback to the design process and extended similar concepts to the computation/alignment of the embodied energy and CO2 of buildings to the UK New Rules of Measurement, Lessons learned knowledge integration in BIM and others.

Internationally, Henry is part of the CIB task Group 90 (TG90) on information integration in Construction. One of the deliverables of this task group is the development of a research roadmap on information integration to which he has actively made contributions. His areas of research interests include sustainable asset development, building design and optimisation, and building information modelling and asset management in the built environment. Henry’s interests extend to applications of building information modelling to integrate emerging Big Data, Open and Link Data for predictive decision-making. He has published several articles of his works in reputable journals and conferences.

Currently, Dr Henry Oti teaches the Communications Technology Module where he introduces students to information modelling using emerging BIM methodology incorporated into the curricula. He also handles aspects of BIM applications in Construction Project Management and Environmental management. He is part of the team delivering the Industry-based MRes programme in Environmental Management for over 100 delegates from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Also, he is involved in the supervision/mentoring of students and a key participant in the Apprenticeship programme for Civil Engineering.
