EU Referendum
The decision to leave the UK following the EU referendum in June 2016 has created an understandable amount of uncertainty around studying in the UK for EU students. EU nationals will continue to be charged Home fees for the 2017/18 and 2018/19 academic year and will still be able to access loan support for the undergraduate and postgraduate taught study from Student Finance England. Further details on what will happen after this point are still pending clarification. A useful place to keep informed of any further updates will be the Universities UK website – Brexit FAQs for Universities and Students.
What Will Happen Next?
For the time being, it is business as usual for EU students wishing to study in the UK. EU nationals will still be able to access loan support and will continue to be charged Home fees in the same way as UK students. There has currently been no news regarding the 2019/20 academic year.
Whilst the nature of Britain’s relationship with Europe will face a period of adjustment, the full process of Britain’s leaving the EU will not be confirmed until March 2019.
I Am A Current EU National Student, How Will The Referendum Affect Me?
The UK will remain in the EU until the Brexit process has been completed. This means that European Economic Area (EEA) and Swiss nationals continue to have the same rights and status, and are subject to the same residence requirements under EU law as was the case before the UK plans to leave EU membership were announced.
I Wish To Apply To A Programme Beginning In The 2018/19 Academic Year. How Will I Be Affected?
On the 21st of April 2017, the government confirmed that EU nationals wishing to apply to undergraduate and master’s degree programmes for the academic year 2018/19 will still be able to apply for the same loan and grant support through Student Finance England. EU nationals will still be entitled to Home fee status. This support will be available for the duration of the degree programme. For the full details on this announcement, please consult the Student Loans Company website.
I Have A Place To Start University In September 2018, How Will I Be Affected?
As with current EU national students, the UK Government has released a statement confirming that EU students in England and Wales starting courses in September 2018, who are eligible for loans under current regulations, will continue to receive them for the courses they are enrolled on. Your fee status will remain unchanged for the duration of your course.
Will Students Be Able To Work In The UK While Being A Student?
Until the transitionary negotiation period has concluded, the UK remains a part of the European Union and so those who were eligible to work in the UK before the referendum result remain so.
