How to Get into Midwifery

What is Midwifery 

Midwifery is a healthcare profession focused on providing care and support to pregnant women, assisting during childbirth, and ensuring the well-being of mothers and babies in the post-birth period. Midwives also offer guidance on reproductive health and family planning. This role demands a strong sense of empathy, excellent communication skills, and a dedication to promoting a safe and positive birthing experience. 

Eligibility and Requirements 

To pursue a midwifery career, you will need to complete a recognised degree course. Check out the eligibility requirements: 

- Education/ Entry Requirements - Entry requirements vary among universities, but they generally include a combination of A-levels, BTEC qualifications, or Access to Higher Education Diplomas. Specific grade and subject requirements can differ, so researching different programs is essential. Most courses require you to have a strong foundation in science subjects such as biology and chemistry.  

- Work Experience - Many courses value relevant work experience, such as in healthcare settings or maternity-related roles. This experience can demonstrate your commitment to the field 

- Personal Qualities - Midwives need to be compassionate, patient, and adaptable. Strong communication skills, an ability to work under pressure, and a genuine passion for supporting families are also crucial traits 

Pursuing a Midwifery Degree

Midwifery Degree Curriculum:

Clinical Placements 

A significant portion of midwifery education involves hands-on experience gained through clinical placements. Upon completing your midwifery degree and registering with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), you'll be ready to embark on your rewarding career as a midwife.
