Tom’s golden win at Yorkshire Jiu-Jitsu tournament

Master’s student Tom Halligan returned with gold after participating in the Yorkshire Winter Jiu-Jitsu Open at Barnsley Metrodome.

Tom, who works in the University sports centre, won the gold medal in the super heavyweight division.

Sports rehabilitation student Josh Walsh won bronze, and their coach, Rob Hilton, came away with silver.

In December, Tom, aged 33, won bronze at a national competition in London, weeks after also winning bronze at the Empire Grappling Lancashire Open Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Open Tournament at Leigh Sports Village.

Tom, who is studying for a Master’s in strength and conditioning, said: “I’m really pleased to finally bring back a gold medal to the University. It was a great day, especially as all three of us won medals.”

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is gaining popularity at the University. The weekly self-defence session takes place each Wednesday at 12.30pm and all staff and students are welcome to get involved.
