The Pro Vice Chancellor (Medicine) at the University of Greater Manchester was honoured at a prestigious awards ceremony in the Houses of Parliament.
Professor Iqbal Singh CBE, who is also a consultant physician at East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust, received an award for lifetime achievement in equality, diversity and care of older people in healthcare at The People’s Awards.
The ceremony, which took place at the House of Commons, recognises individuals who have broken barriers, challenged conventions and made outstanding contributions to political and public life over the past year.
Professor Singh, received the award from Seema Malhotra, the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Equalities.
Dr Rupa Huq, the MP for Ealing, who hosted the event, said: “Their dedication, resilience and leadership inspire us all, embodying the progress that drives meaningful changes in society.”
Professor Singh is a pioneer in ethnic health and diversity and a leading figure in healthcare and medical regulation.
He is the founder Chair of two centres, CESOP, which helps to embed dignity, compassion and respect in the care of older people and CRST, which supports doctors in difficulty and provides training and support to enable a safe return to practice.
Professor Singh co-chaired the Singh and Forde review (2022) and recommendations focussed on creating 21st century regulation that is compassionate, supportive, fair and local first.
He also co-chairs the European group for the safety of older people and during the COVID pandemic, led the ‘Staying safe and well project’, which ensured the health and wellbeing of older people while shielding.
Professor Singh said: “I am humbled and grateful for the recognition and have an overwhelming sense of gratitude, not just for the recognition, but for the countless number of people who have walked the journey with me over many years.
“The award is a recognition of how, collectively, we made healthcare more compassionate, safer and fairer, improving access and outcomes.”
Also receiving the awards at the event were Rt Hon Kemi Badenoch MP, for Parliamentarian of the Year, Rt Hon Kit Malthouse MP and Lord Shaun Bailey.
