A student nurse from the University of Greater Manchester has been shortlisted for a prestigious award.
Becky Ekins, who is studying BSc Adult Nursing, at the University’s Petroc satellite centre in North Devon, is nominated for national student Nursing Times Award for Innovation in Practice.
Becky, aged 35, will present in London later this month and the ceremony will take place in London on 2 May.
She said: “My initiative aims to enhance students’ identity and wellbeing in practice and has received positive feedback from students, patients and staff across various settings.
Becky added: “Studying at Petroc satellite centre has allowed me to do this course locally which would not have been possible due to limited childcare.
“It has also linked me to North Devon Hospital which is where I attend my placements and start my career as a nurse.”
The mum of four, who completes her three-year degree next month, said: “I went into nursing to make a difference and I feel proud to have been nominated for such a prestigious award.
“My overall aim is to meet the growing health needs of patients and I look forward to my career as a registered nurse and continuing to be actively involved in nursing strategic improvements.”
Becky has been a Domiciliary Care Manager and worked at North Devon District Hospital as a bank Health Care Assistant, which she says led her into wanting to pursue a role as a registered nurse.
She is also a University of Greater Manchester student rep, which she says has allowed me to advocate for students within her cohort throughout the degree, ensuring that their voices are heard and that concerns are listened to and achievements are celebrated.
