Dr Amoakwa is an experienced Primary Care Researcher and lecturer in Health and Social care and currently teaching Social Work/Childhood Studies.
He obtained his PhD in 2006 at the University of Manchester titled The Dynamics of Epidemiology of HIV/AIDS in Sub-Saharan Africa. He also holds an MBA(Chester), M.Phil., BA, Dip.Ed. (Cape Coast) and FHEA. Dr Amoakwa is currently a lecturer in the Social Work/childhood studies. Prior to joining Bolton, he was the course leader for Healthcare Practice (UCEN Manchester) between 2018 and 2022 leading on research modules and student dissertations. Before joining UCEN, Dr Amoakwa worked as a palliative care researcher within the Wolfson Palliative Care Research Centre at Hull York Medical School University of Hull between 2016 and 2018 helping in developing needs assessment tool for palliative care cancer patients and mentored PhD students at the Centre.
Dr Amoakwa also worked as a Senior Lecturer at West London College of Business and Management Sciences, between 2012 and 2016 where he led the Healthcare Management Programme. Prior to this, he held a position as a Post-Doc Research Scientist at North Wales Clinical School Department of Primary Care and Public Health Cardiff School of Medicine between 2007 and 2012 as a trials coordinator and manager on two major funded projects (Activity Increase Despite Arthritis (AIDA) and SUPAC Lung Cancer). As part of his doctoral training, Dr Amoakwa taught on the MSC Health Policy Programme at the University of Manchester and served as a cover teacher for many colleges in Greater Manchester between 2002 and 2006.
Research interests and specialisms:
Dr Amoakwa’s main research interests are: Cancer in Primary Care, Musculoskeletal Research and Epidemiology. His research focus has been on Needs Assessment of Palliative Care Cancer Patients, optimising the role of Primary Care in lung cancer follow-up care, developing physical activity intervention for hip and knee pain, economic evaluation of physical activity interventions, randomised controlled trials and epidemic modelling
Teaching responsibilities:
Main teaching activities are on the BA and MA Social Work Programme, and childhood studies.
