Dr Joseph Horne

Business Development Lead - The Centre for Advanced Manufacturing

As the business development lead for the Centre for Advanced Manufacturing I am responsible for building our network throughout industry and higher education, bringing in projects and grants for the CfAM to grow and establish itself as a hub for advanced manufacturing in Bolton.

I obtained a Master’s degree (MPhys) in Physics from the University of Liverpool in 2016. Following that I undertook a PhD in Physics focusing on Nanoscience and Renewable Energy in The Stephenson Institute of Renewable Energy at the University of Liverpool, graduating in 2022. My PhD research concentrated on the use of metal nanoparticles to enhance the performance of semiconductor hydrogen generation systems.

After my PhD I was employed as a product development specialist for a chemical supplier working on novel force sensitive resistor materials. I then worked as a Physicist in the Research and Development department for a multinational scientific instrument manufacturer. My work there concentrated on electron spectroscopy instruments and ion optics.

I started at the University of Bolton in 2022, along with my work in Business Development I will be leading the research performed in the CfAM, assisting with article and paper writing, and developing our manufacturing and research capabilities. We hope to work alongside local business, AM users and suppliers other areas of the University and partner HE institutions. We will be researching new metallic printing capabilities using feedstock powder and final part characterisation techniques using our powder characterisation instruments and Instron testing suite.
