Peter Swain is a born and bred Boltonian who completed his PhD at the University of Bolton in 2009, He has subsequently been widely published in academic journals, becoming a leading contributor to the so-called ‘Origins of Football’ debate. He has also written the introduction to the history of the University of Bolton entitled ‘Future in History: University of Bolton, 1825 Onwards’ as well as ‘The Golden Age of Cinema-going in Bolton’ and 'Bolton Women at Play: The Story of Our Game, 1900-1950’. Other published works include topics as diverse as Nineteenth Century Pedestrianism and Crown Green Bowling in South Lancashire. He is currently working on a book commissioned by a well-known International publisher entitled ‘The Emergence of Football: Sport, Culture and Society in the Nineteenth Century’.
