Professor Dr Alan Walsh qualified as a Solicitor of the Supreme Court on the 1 December 1975. He was a Solicitor with Russell & Russell Solicitors from the 1 December 1975 and became a Partner in the Firm in January 1977 becoming joint Senior Partner in 1983 until his retirement in 2010 after 37 years of continuous service, to become a full-time Coroner.

From 2013 he became an HM Area Coroner and on the 3 January 2019 was appointed HM Senior Coroner (acting) for Manchester West and continued to act in that role until September 2020.

In 2015 Alan was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by the University of Bolton for services to the University, the legal profession, the town and the Community.

In 2020 Alan was appointed a Visiting Professor in Coronial Law at the University of Bolton and Chaired the Law Board of the Centre for Contemporary Coronial Law, which is the only Centre for Coronial Law in England & Wales.
