Professor John Alcolado

Interim Dean

Professor John Alcolado, DM BM(Hons) PGCMedEd RCPath(ME) FRCP, is a distinguished healthcare professional and academic leader with a background in medical education, clinical practice and strategic leadership. Serving as the Executive Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Life Sciences at the University of Chester from 2020 to 2023, he spearheaded the establishment and growth of a new graduate entry medical school.

During his tenure, Dr. Alcolado achieved GMC Stage 7 approval for student admissions, demonstrating his adept navigation of strategic planning, operational delivery and program development.

Recognised for his accomplishments, Professor Alcolado was recruited by Aston University in March 2023, where he initially served as Deputy Dean of Medical Education and later as the Interim Dean of Medical Education and Deputy Head of School. His responsibilities included facilitating a smooth leadership transition, planning for the expansion of medical student numbers, introducing nursing and physician associate programs and exploring innovative healthcare education initiatives.

Beyond academia, Professor Alcolado actively contributes to the All-Wales Medical Examiner service and continues to be clinically active in the specialties of endocrinology, diabetes and acute medicine, holding an Honorary Consultant role in the NHS. He is also a GMC Associate and Tribunal Member on Fitness to Practice hearings for the Medical Practitioner Tribunal Service, where he made critical decisions related to patient safety, public protection and professional confidence.

Having held various roles in the NHS, including Associate Medical Director and Non-Executive Director in a large NHS Trust, Professor Alcolado has contributed significantly to planning hospital relocations, developing specialised healthcare services and promoting obesity services and continuous insulin infusion pump services.

In his current role as interim Dean at the Institute of Medicine, The University of Bolton, Professor Alcolado brings a unique blend of academic rigor, clinical experience and strategic leadership. His commitment to improving patient safety, enhancing healthcare education, and supporting service transformation reflects his passion for collaboration with healthcare professionals and leaders.
