Surely I have to be good at maths to study accounting?

When you think about a career in accounting, does your mind instantly wander to thoughts of doing impossible equations? Most people think you need to be some kind of maths genius to succeed in this field. That idea often stops people from pursuing a degree in accounting. But what if we told you that being good with numbers isn’t as important as you might think?

Why accounting isn’t all about the numbers

Contrary to popular belief, most of the calculations you’ll need to complete an accounting course are basic arithmetic. Adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing—the kind of things you probably already do every single day to some extent. In fact, accounting is often more about attention to detail, logical thinking and problem-solving. You’ll spend far more time analysing information, making decisions and communicating your findings than doing sums. These are the skills that employers look for, not the ability to do quick equations off the top of your head.

And when you do need to work things out? Modern accounting relies heavily on automated software to do the work for you. Spreadsheets, databases and financial management systems. These tools simplify the process of things like creating financial reports or tracking expenses. Your focus will instead be on inputting data correctly and interpreting the results in front of you. You’ll likely never need to reach further than your phone’s calculator to finish a task. As an accounting student, you’ll be taught how to use these tools and properly make informed decisions.

So, who can study accounting?

Honest answer? Anyone! Whether you’re fresh out of your A-levels, a parent returning to education or just someone looking for a career change; accounting isn’t just for “academics.” If you have good attention to detail, communication skills and a knack for analytics, you could be a perfect fit. Wondering what you’ll be studying? An accounting course covers a range of different topics. You’ll learn all about financial reporting, taxation and auditing, as well as following regulations and procedures. Our courses focus on helping you learn how to apply these principles to real-world scenarios.

Plus, you don’t need to decide your entire future right now. Accounting graduates can easily find work in business, finance and management—all roles that offer long-term stability. So, no matter your background or mathematical ability, accounting is definitely worth considering as a real option.
