If you’re interested in helping companies achieve growth and smash sales targets, you might be considering digital marketing. But what is it and what can you do with a degree in this ground-breaking and exciting field? We’ll explore this in today’s quick read.
Digital marketing is how brands connect with possible and past customers via online means. It could be through SMS, banner ads, PPC, social media, email and more. Anytime you’re talking to potential customers or existing buyers through a digital channel, that’s digital marketing. Marketers use a number of skills to execute digital campaigns from media buying to copywriting. And then after the campaign ends, these experts will analyse the data to see what worked, what didn’t and where the opportunities for optimisation are.
There is a wide range of activities that fall under digital marketing. These include social media, mobile, affiliate, influencer, SEO, marketing automation, viral marketing, display advertising, PPC, behavioural, relationship, content and more. As new channels emerge in the online space, they’re added to this trailblazing field. So, it’s always evolving in line with how consumers can or want to interact with brands.
Yes! You can and should choose digital marketing as a career if you’re passionate about helping brands reach their customers in meaningful ways. If you’re comfortable analysing data and looking for trends and if you have a creative streak, digital marketing is an amazing career option. It’s perfect for people who want to keep up with technology and how customers are buying so they can help their brand disrupt the status quo. And it’s very rewarding. With a firm basis in data, it’s easy to see if you’re achieving your targets, so you always know you’re making a difference to the bottom line.
Digital marketing isn’t a difficult job per se, but it can be challenging. This is because the targets set for marketers are always a stretch and the technologies and platforms used in this discipline are always changing. Within any given year, new channels are launched and beloved channels fade into obscurity. Take the recent shift with Twitter and Threads, for example. So, it’s critical that you commit to lifelong learning and never get tired of trying new things.
Getting a digital marketing degree can improve your chances of landing a great role. That’s because employers want graduates with up-to-date skills and knowledge to augment their existing creative teams. Plus, earning a diploma shows your dedication and perseverance too. Completing a programme of study isn’t easy and employers want to see that you’re up for challenges. Finally, it’s important to note that digital is a highly-transferable degree that’s useful not just within the field but for related roles like operations and sales.
Now, with a degree in digital marketing, you have a world of opportunities at your fingertips. You could be an SEO specialist, helping companies get to the front page of Google. Or, you could be an ad copywriter, crafting incredible slogans for PPC. Maybe you love numbers and you want to be an analyst, reporting on campaign performance. Or perhaps you like to be in charge and want to take a digital marketing manager role. The options are endless and the field of digital marketing is always changing and always in demand.
Maybe that’s what makes digital marketing a good career in the UK. With so many advancements, updates and releases to keep track of, marketers with current knowledge are always in need. Plus, this role is usually a standard 9-5 with great benefits, fabulous creative expression and new challenges to put your mind to every day. If you want a role where no two days are exactly the same, digital marketing is a good career for you.
Salaries always vary by role and experience level. If you’re just starting out, expect to earn £22-£25k. But as you gain more experience, this can easily double. Earning around £70K plus bonus is fairly standard for a head of marketing with several years of experience. And at the highest level, CMOs of big companies in the UK earn six-figure salaries. That’s not to mention the soft benefits and performance bonuses that many marketers are able to negotiate for. Plus, it’s important not to overlook the opportunity to open your own marketing agency for uncapped potential!
Every single day, digital marketing roles are listed in Greater Manchester. This in-demand field covers all sectors from tech to health. You could work as a content and communications associate for Tesla or as a PPX executive for AO.com. In fact, with remote working so popular, you can live in Manchester and work for any company offering full-remote positions. Need help to find your ideal entry-level role?
