Interested in a career combining technology and healthcare?
Before we can judge the importance of biomedical engineering, we need to be able to define what it is. By definition, it is the application of the principles and problem-solving techniques of engineering to biology and medicine. Typically, it is used within the healthcare industry, all the way from diagnosis and analysis to treatment and recovery. However, engineering is an innovative field, so biomedical engineering can also be portrayed as identifying the advances that improve human health and healthcare at all levels. Biomedical engineer jobs are broad in themselves, combining mechanical electrical, and chemical engineering, as well as material science, chemistry, maths, and computer science. Therefore, by graduating with a biomedical engineering degree, you will have the skills to pursue a successful career. So, why is biomedical engineering important today?
The Importance of Biomedical Engineers
Biomedical engineers possess the skills to be able to scan physiology, biology, healthcare and health informatics, mechanics, and engineering, so therefore they can combine these skills to create solutions to current world health issues. Therefore, helping to change the way patients are treated and reducing the cost of care. This is an important issue today as the UK population is growing rapidly, and with our digitalising society, the “tech-savvy” public is becoming more and more aware of new inventions in medical technology that could revolutionise the future of biomedical engineering in healthcare. Therefore, this could mean that more people will start to seek biomedical solutions to most complex health issues, which ultimately increases the demand for biomedical engineering jobs in the UK. This is intensified by the projection that employment for biomedical engineers is forecasted to grow by 23% between 2014 and 2024, which is three times faster than other industry sectors. Therefore, if you are looking for a career, then a biomedical engineering degree would be a great choice to gain your qualification in a fast-evolving industry with great job satisfaction.
Biomedical Engineering Today
So, as biomedical engineering is such a lucrative sector, let’s start with human brain injuries. Biomedical engineers are hoping to develop ‘biogels’ that can repair and regrow brain tissue after trauma. Alternatively, new material for surgical dressings is shown to prevent the recurrence of melanoma and enhance the healing process. This is an important process due to its ability to kill cancer cells and simultaneously regenerate healthy ones; as cancer is one of the biggest global killers. Alternatively, are you concerned with the number of people being diagnosed with heart conditions in the UK? Biomedical engineers have conducted research to predict the efficiency of drug treatments for heart attacks.
Additionally, the importance of graduate biomedical engineers today is reflected in the salary, graduates can benefit from an average salary of £30,752.
