Have an eye for design? Civil Engineer may be the degree for you!

As much as technical skills and maths come into the role of a civil engineer, you also need to have an eye for design to be successful and create unique builds. If you are naturally creative, you may not have thought about a career in civil engineering. But you could excel in this industry.

What is civil engineering?

Civil engineering involves the design, construction and maintenance of a man-made structure, whether it’s a building or a bridge, tunnel or railway. Civil engineers are needed to complete the majority of building plans today.

Structural design

The design part of civil engineering is commonly referred to as structural design. If you decide to take our Civil Engineering degree, we cover the basic principles of structural engineering as well. Structural design is important as it ensures the projects are set out to go ahead correctly and safely, meeting all the planner's expectations. Having a careful eye that you can incorporate with engineering is a skill that is likely to impress employers.

Taking on the structural design role of a project can be complex; but with the right qualifications and training, anything is possible! Imagine the feeling of seeing the completed work of a building you successfully designed… incredible.
