Legendary Photos Agency's 75th Anniversary

21/04/2022

On 14th March 2022, Magnum Photos officially reached its 75th anniversary. The occasion is to be marked with a stunning weeklong sale of some of their most iconic images taken by Magnum Photos’ agency photographers. This sale is to be the first of three that will be made by the agency who plan to mark their anniversary all year long, and the photos on sale make for an interesting study, particularly if you are studying for a photography degree in Manchester.

Who are Magnum Photos?

If you are looking at studying for a photography degree in Manchester you may already be familiar with the name of this photo agency. Magnum is an iconic photography agency that was founded in 1947 by a group of four photographers, Robert Capa, George Rodger, Henri Cartier-Bresson and David “Chim” Seymour. All four of them had been involved with photography during the Second World War and were scared by what they had witnessed but also had a desire to see what was still out there.

They may not have studied for a photography and media degree but between them, they have produced some very powerful images over the years that reflect their own individual styles as photographers.

The agency also features work from a number of other very established photographers.

The Square Print Sale

The Square Print Sale

Called ‘The Square Print Sale’ and with the title Precedents, this March 2022 sale will offer over 70 classic images from Magnum. They will all be available on 6 x 6-inch archival paper. The further 2 sales in 2022 will take place in June and October.

Some of the images that are included in the sale are:

●        The Tank Man – an iconic image taken of a young defiant protester in 1898 in front of a moving tank in Tiananmen Square (Stuart Franklin)

●        An image of the Beatles captured during the filming of “A Hard Day’s Night” depicts them dashing along with a train platform (David Hurn)

●        Marlene Dietrich at the Columbia Records studio in 1952 captured mid-song (Eve Arnold)

●        Martin Luther King in 1957 addressed the crowds at the Prayer Pilgrimage for Freedom which took place in Washington DC (Bob Henriques)

The photographs in the sale have been carefully chosen as standalone pieces or to work with other photographs that are for sale. A total of 50% of the proceeds of the sale will be donated to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to help with the assistance they are currently providing in Ukraine and other areas in perilous circumstances.
