A question we are commonly faced with when considering a career in dentistry: is dental technology a good degree?
Dental technology beautifully combines technical skill, the ability to care for people and a surprising level of artistry. Dental technology degrees are dedicated to the unwavering pursuit of cultivating the next generation of dentistry experts, honing their skills and passions and training them to the highest levels of competency and knowledge in the field.
Whilst studying a dental technology degree, you will get hands-on practical experience and gain a high level of familiarity with practices such as: dentures, crowns, bridges and dental braces that improve patients’ appearance, speech and chewing function. You will also have the opportunity to apply your skills to live patient cases via work-based learning. In order to understand the influence and design of dental appliances, you will learn the fundamental aspects of oral anatomy and physiology.
Dental science degrees have a rich history of academic development, with progression on to MSc postgraduate courses and PhD research available to successful BSc graduates. Dental technology degrees are designed for those looking to take up a career in the field of dental technology or dental biomaterials. Upon your successful graduation, a vast range of opportunities are available to you. This may be in the NHS, commercial laboratories, private practices, dental manufacturing companies or dental schools. There is a plethora of roles you can fulfil as a dentist, from restorative dentistry to paediatric dentistry.
