Course Overview

The University of Bolton’s experienced and supportive team can help you build on your existing communication and work-related skills and experience, preparing you for undergraduate study in nursing. We’ll support you to develop essential academic and professional skills that are vital for success at university.

We’ll focus on helping you learn how to communicate in the academic environment, both in writing and verbally. You’ll also explore how to develop original work and learn about the importance of referencing to ensure you avoid academic misconduct. Our dedicated team will guide you as you learn the skills necessary to become a professional student, such as how to work with others, manage your time effectively, solve problems and develop strategies of resilience. Gaining all these skills will prepare you for undergraduate study in nursing and offer a great platform for developing your employability skills.

On successful completion of this 18-week programme, it’s expected that you’ll progress to a BSc (Hons) Nursing (Adult) degree (subject to meeting all other entry criteria).

  • Please note that this course is only available to Home students.
  • Normally, you’ll have at least five GCSEs at grade C or above or grade 4 to 9 (or equivalent) including English and Mathematics. Please contact us for a list of acceptable GCSE equivalents.
  • You must also have a period of work experience in a relevant area such as health care, and be able to provide evidence of learning at Level 3.
  • If you're planning to change career and have qualifications in a discipline unrelated to nursing or health care, we'll be happy to consider your application.
  • If your application is successfully short-listed, then you’ll be asked to undertake a numeracy and literacy assessment. If you’re successful during this phase, then you’ll be invited for interview.
  • The interview process will involve face-to-face interviews with academic staff, practice staff and service users. You’ll also be assessed on your values, behaviours, communication and problem solving skills. We’re seeking students who can demonstrate commitment to a nursing career, who have excellent communication skills and who are caring, compassionate and courageous.
  • If you’re successful at the interview stage, you’ll be asked to undergo occupational health screening and a DBS check.
  • You’ll need to demonstrate that you’re of good health and good character and satisfactorily pass occupational health screening.
  • The BSc (Hons) Nursing (Adult) degree course involves working unsupervised with vulnerable adults and you must gain an Enhanced Disclosure certificate from the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) before starting your degree-level studies. Charges are payable to cover the cost of the DBS Enhanced Disclosure application and annual registration with the online Update Service.
  • Please note that this course is subject to the University of Bolton's Fitness to Practise procedure.

  • Your certificates for the qualifications you are using to gain entry to the course – you will need to enter the completion date and upload copies

  • Personal statement – this can be either input into the relevant field or uploaded separately

  • Details including e-mail addresses of two referees, at least one of which should be someone who can provide an academic reference

As an international student you are not allowed to study this course because of the restrictions on your visa.

Teaching & Assessment

We use a variety of teaching and learning methods to help you acquire and develop the appropriate skills, knowledge and concepts needed to successfully complete the course.

Activities such as practical sessions/scenes, seminars, tutorials, self-directed study, lectures, video viewing and analysis, tutorials, IT sessions, library and guided study promote active learning. We adopt a variety of practical approaches using a blended learning environment. We also use a virtual learning environment website to share additional learning materials, course content and support resources.

Summative assessments are designed to determine whether you have met the learning outcomes for each module. You can expect to undertake both written and verbal summative assessments. We also use formative assessments to help you and your tutors check your progress, including in-class activities and group work. These do not, however, count towards your final module marks.
