Queens Dental Sciences Centre (QuDeSC) at the University of Greater Manchester provides exceptional academic education and professional training, at undergraduate and postgraduate level. The postgraduate full time clinical programmes align to the GDC’s Safe Practitioner Framework and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons intercollegiate examinations.

The programmes have been meticulously designed, to impart knowledge and skills essential for a productive and rewarding future career. QuDeSC programmes are constantly reviewed through the University's quality assurance framework, and this leads to state-of-the-art professionally relevant curricula that are tailored for Dental Care Professionals (DCP) to work as 21st century dental experts and subject leaders. The programmes strike a fine balance between academic achievement and clinical practice.

Key Objectives of the Queens Dental Sciences Centre

Aim

To provide opportunities for professional and academic development through undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, having a curriculum that embraces latest evidence-based research and established good practice with patient-centred training. In addition, QuDeSC fosters professional growth and the advancement of dentistry. These programmes are ideally suited to both 18-year old students who are entering the dental profession and working professionals residing in the United Kingdom or anywhere in the world. Some programmes are delivered on campus using the full-time student framework, whilst other programmes are delivered part-time using collaborative off-campus partnerships.

Mission

Queens Dental Sciences Centre provides patient-centred education and professional training to prepare for advanced work in both community and private dental care. QuDeSC has a clearly defined mandate to offer education that is accessible to all who will benefit from the experience of outstanding quality and innovation. The University is invested in the use of latest dental and medical technologies to ensure practice-immersed learning. For example, use of state-of-the-art dental skills laboratories and virtual cadaver anatomage units. The methodology of QuDeSC is to inspire the next generation of world-class dental professionals who will significantly contribute to the development of the whole dental profession.

QuDeSC provides access to cutting-edge technology and equipment, as well as experienced faculty members which is made up of leaders in the field of dentistry. The University is renowned for its teaching quality and student satisfaction. Indeed, the University has been 1st in the Northwest for Student Satisfaction since 2019*. Students are academically and emotionally prepared in a culture of compassion, critical thinking and lifelong learning, developing refined clinical skills and professionalism. University Dental Clinic

Queens Dental Sciences Centre has clinical facilities, providing the chance to treat actual patients expanding on simulated training. A fully furnished implant suite, a microscope with a video link, CBCT for enhanced case planning, and scanners that allow delegates to virtually design their cases and scan their preparations, are provided. There are multiple educational options available for clinical training, including virtual training utilising dedicated laboratories connected to clinics where real therapy sessions take place. These laboratories are connected for remote consultation through internet tools and have video recording for OSCE assessments.

Clinic Skills Laboratory

Training and skills development is provided by the QuDeSC Dental Team of academics. A flexible skills laboratory and a fully operational dental suite are combined in the Clinical Skills Unit to improve and advance the operational knowledge and abilities of the learners. This is an ideal setting for fostering growth and enhancing skills to compliment contemporary dental practice in a safe supportive environment.

Innovative Approach to Training in the Provision of Continuing Education Programmes

The clinical skills centre offers training for the MSc and BSc programmes. Independent CPD dental courses and hands-on training are accessible in its cutting-edge facilities.

Programmes Overview

QuDeSC delivers a spectrum of undergraduate and postgraduate diplomas and degrees. It also offers short course certificates and clinical internships. It holds an extensive range of course titles that emphasise practical application. As you learn technical knowledge and theory, you’ll also continually apply it. The curriculum enables technical knowledge and theory to be applied to practice strengthening clinical skills and expanding abilities and competencies.

MSc Clinical Programmes

Our full and part time MSc degree programmes are internationally recognised and on completion, graduates will be awarded a degree from the University of Greater Manchester. The University received degree awarding power and is fully recognised by the British Government and listed on the United Kingdom’s Department for Education list of recognised UK awarding institutions.

Through a combination of academic rigour and experience, QuDeSC offers a flexible and innovative approach to education especially when it comes to in-service dental professionals. The University appreciates the time pressures, financial commitments and clinical responsibilities unique to dental care professionals and programmes are designed with this in mind.

The MSc Degree course listings permit you to choose from implant dentistry, digital dentistry, orthodontics, clear aligner therapy, endodontics, periodontology, prosthodontics and digital dental technology. These courses incorporate and expose students to the very latest digital-driven technologies and treatment modalities.

On Campus (full-time) Clinical Programmes

On Campus MSc Clinical Programmes Key Features

The following MSc programmes are delivered via a 3-year or a 2-year pathway depending on the training placement duration required.

  1. Clinical training in the UK at the Queens Dental Sciences Centre and outreach clinics.
  2. Face-to-face teaching delivered from modern, advanced facilities at the Queens Dental Sciences Centre and University Campus.
  3. Variable duration (2 to 3 years attendance options)
  4. Support in attaining MFDS
  5. Gain a degree from the University of Greater Manchester, accredited by the British Government whose degrees are recognised internationally.

Off Campus (part-time) Clinical Programmes

The following MSc programmes are delivered via a 3-year pathway but can be completed within two years.

These MSc programmes are also available at Postgraduate Certificate and Postgraduate Diploma (level 7). Blending learning with 80% online content supported by face-to-face teaching and clinical training minimising lost practice time and maximising learning.

MSc Digital Dental Technology

Off campus MSc Clinical Programmes Key Features

The following MSc programmes are delivered via a 3-year or a 2-year pathway depending on the training placement duration required.

  1. Flexible study modules make up a blended part-time MSc Degree course from face-to-face and online learning.
  2. Studying from work, home or whilst travelling, all programmes are delivered predominantly online, giving you the flexibility to fit your studies around your practice and home life.
  3. Face-to-face teaching delivered from modern advanced facilities at the Queens Dental Sciences Centre.
  4. Adjunctive programmes, supplemental formative courses which support your course modules and deliver live regular interactive clinical training.
  5. A personal academic tutor will provide regular online tutorials to support learning and guidance through course modules on a one-to-one basis. The personal academic tutors are there to help and support as needed to ensure your success.

Clinical placement training

The objective is to provide dentists with the knowledge and clinical skills essential for the delivery of competent, high-quality dental care following current regulatory standards. An important feature is continuous supervised clinical training at regular intervals.

The curriculum is a blend of teaching and learning methods, which combine clinical skills training with the acquisition of knowledge, skills, and professional attributes at all levels of the programme. All teaching and learning activities are patient and student-centred and are specifically designed to ensure students are fully prepared for a primary care career as Dental Care Professionals (DCP).

BSc (Hons) Clinical Dental Technology (CDT)

Clinical Dental Technicians

Clinical dental technicians are registered by the General Dental Council and have been trained to offer a variety of denture services directly to patients. These services were formerly exclusively offered through a dentist. Clinical dental technicians may perform any or all of the following clinical procedures:

  • Obtain dental and medical history
  • Perform intra-oral scanning
  • Take x-rays and photographic images of the mouth
  • Distinguish between normal and abnormal effects of aging, especially relating to tooth loss
  • Make referrals to other dental professionals where necessary
  • Advise on how to take care of your dentures and achieve optimum oral health
  • Devise a treatment plan and obtain informed patient consent

Clinical Training

Clinical training is supervised at the University’s dental suite permitting access and direct interaction with patients. Technicians will be guided throughout the assessment and treatment planning stages, essential pre-requisites for the delivery of safe and safe patient care.

Dental Faculty

Professor Dr Stewart Harding

Dean & Professor of Dentistry

Professor Dr Stewart Harding graduated from Newcastle Dental School in 1982 and is currently a Professor for Dentistry at the University of Greater Manchester, QuDeSC. Since qualifying he has held various full and part-time hospital appointments and introduced osseointegrated implants into his restorative and orthodontic practice in 1985 since which he has successfully placed and restored thousands of implants in the UK and internationally. He pioneered postgraduate education for general practitioners wishing to attain recognised training in implant dentistry and was instrumental in designing and instigating several postgraduate degree programmers in the field. In 2019 the University of Bolton validated various MSc programmes in different fields of dentistry which can be attended both full and part time. These programmes were written and devised by Professor Stewart Harding. He has also helped to set up similar postgraduate programmes in Singapore, Dubai, Sudan and Ghana with plans to expand into India and Pakistan. He has been an Expert witness since 2010 and manages over 100 cases a year for various legal firms and medical defence organisations and has advised the GDC on several cases.

Dr Serafeim Petousis

Clinical Director & Visiting Professor

Dr Serafeim Petousis received his degree in Dentistry in 2000. He has been awarded an MSc in Implant Dentistry, and a Diploma in Aligners by The City of London Dental School, and the University of Greater Manchester.  He has been the Clinical Director for The City of London Dental School since 2021.From May 2024, Honorary Assistant Professor Dr Petousis has attended many post-graduate courses and is continually developing his skills. He is currently learning the latest Implant techniques and perfecting his current methods of treatment in contemporary dentistry through education. He has worked in many dental clinics in various settings across Athens, London, and Dubai, treating patients with diverse dental needs. He has a distinct interest in smile design, teeth whitening, crowns and bridges, veneers, and cosmetic resin bonding, especially dental implants. He stated his interest regarding clinical negligence, ethics, and consent, ensuring patients at the practice get the best health care service available. Dr Petousis is passionate about dental implants and always wants to share his knowledge and experience with his colleagues.

Dr Nikolaos Poulis

Programme Lead of MSc Digital Dental Technology

Dr Nikolaos Poulis received his Dental Technology degree (BSc) from the Technological Educational Institute of Athens in 2005. He continued his studies at the Queen Mary University of London obtaining his MSc in Dental Materials in 2006. His PhD was awarded from the University of Athens in 2014, with a dissertation on the antimicrobial action of ozone and its impact on the dimensional stability and the surface of dental impression materials

For ten years (2007-2017), Dr Poulis run his Dental Laboratory in Athens specialising in Fixed and Removable Prosthodontics using contemporary materials and techniques. In parallel, he was a Laboratory Associate at the Technological Educational Institute of Athens, where he supervised a large number of dissertations. In 2017, he was appointed a Lecturer in Dental Technology at the University of Greater Manchester. Since 2020, he is the Programme Lead of MSc Digital Dental Technology.
