NHS and healthcare staff from the region met academic programme leaders from the University of Greater Manchester to discuss future collaboration.

The event was held at the University’s new £40m Institute of Medical Sciences.

Programme leaders and lecturers gave a series of five minute TED talks on a variety of subjects:

  • Dr Mark Holland, Associate TIRI Professor, spoke about the power of collaboration
  • Tyrone Roberts, Chief Nursing Office & DIPC, Bolton NHS Foundation Trust, explained the importance of ensuring the right systems were in place
  • Professor Iqbal Singh CBE, talked about ensuring all teaching focused on patient safety
  • Dr Amanda Costello, about efforts to retain undergraduate Adult Nurse learners from dropping out
  • Bimpe Kuti-Matekenya, Programme Lead In Public Health, explained the huge importance of Public Health in addressing health inequalities
  • Sarah McRae, Lead for Greater Manchester Training Hub, talked about the work to transform social care education through collaborative research
  • Dr Vishal Sharma, Consultant Obstetric Physician, from the Liverpool University Hospital appeared by video link to praise the University’s team who have worked with them to develop a pioneering co-developed module on maternal medicine
  • Dr Anna Ziemer, Programme Leader MSc (Pre-reg) Physiotherapy Lecturer in Neurological Physiotherapy

President and Vice Chancellor of the University of Greater Manchester, Professor George Holmes DL, welcomed everyone.

He said: “We are now the University of Greater Manchester. Our signs will change, our name will change, our logo will change, but the institution in a sense won’t change - it is still committed to the local area and working closely with our colleagues in the NHS and all health care areas.

“We really appreciate you coming here to work with us and the work you will do with us.

“We can share our facilities with you, share our knowledge and hopefully have your input to our programmes, to our students. They will only be successful in professional practice because of you. It is important that we connect.”

There were opportunities to network and afterwards the visitors were taken on a tour of the building, which is in the grounds of the Royal Bolton Hospital. They saw the state-of-the-art facilities, which include the latest simulation suites and digital anatomage tables.
