University of Bolton, why we are the right choice
Location - Bolton, Greater Manchester
As a university community, we prioritise the safety and well-being of both our students and staff. It is paramount to us that students can engage in their learning and academic pursuits in a safe and secure environment, free from any form of abuse, harassment, or harm. At the University of Bolton, safeguarding is a collective responsibility shared by every member of our community.
We are committed to fostering a culture of respect, dignity, and inclusivity, where everyone feels valued and supported. This includes promoting awareness and understanding of safeguarding principles and practices among students, staff, and faculty members.
By working together and remaining vigilant, we can create a campus environment that upholds the highest standards of safety and ensures that every individual has the opportunity to thrive and succeed. Safeguarding is not just a policy or procedure—it is a fundamental aspect of our commitment to the well-being of our university community.
Safeguarding is a comprehensive approach aimed at protecting both children and adults from the risk of harm. It encompasses various measures to prevent individuals who are considered unsuitable from working with vulnerable populations and to identify and address situations where harm may occur.
At the University, safeguarding entails a zero-tolerance stance towards any behaviours that may potentially cause harm. This includes but is not limited to, abuse, neglect, exploitation, discrimination, or any other form of harmful conduct.
The University is committed to creating a safe and secure environment for all members of its community. This involves implementing policies, procedures, and training programs to promote awareness, prevent harm, and respond effectively to safeguarding concerns.
Prevent is a vital component of the UK Government's counter-terrorism strategy, known as CONTEST. It is aimed at safeguarding individuals and communities from the threat of terrorism by preventing individuals from becoming terrorists or supporting terrorist activities.
Under the Prevent duty, which was introduced by the Counter-Terrorism and Security Act 2015, higher education institutions like universities are required to assess the risks of individuals being drawn into terrorism or extremism. They are also mandated to have plans in place to mitigate these risks in a proportionate and risk-based manner.
Extremism, as defined by government guidance, involves vocal or active opposition to fundamental British values, including democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance of different faiths and beliefs. This definition encompasses actions or statements that advocate violence or promote hatred against specific groups or individuals.
The University takes its Prevent responsibilities seriously, aiming to ensure the safety and well-being of students, staff, and the wider community while upholding academic freedom and freedom of speech. It is committed to implementing measures that effectively address the risks of radicalization and terrorism, while also respecting individuals' rights and promoting a culture of tolerance and respect within the university environment.
