I chose this course as I had been working in the Civil team at Jacobs for 4 years prior and I wanted to become a qualified civil engineer on a course that was accredited by the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE). By choosing the apprenticeship route, I was able to gain my degree but also work towards my Incorporated Engineer (IEng) status with the ICE at the same time.
I thoroughly enjoyed the site surveying module as we went outside and used the total stations and dumpy levels. Using the equipment outside made it much easier to understand [its] purpose as we could physically use it and see what it did.
There was a good mix of assignments, practical work and exams, with the assignments and [practicals] also being a mix of individual work and teamwork in groups. [Lastly], the Moodle page is a tool that supported me greatly throughout my apprenticeships. If you ever need to find anything relating to modules you will find it on Moodle.
My main goal when starting at Jacobs was to become a qualified Civil Engineer with IEng status and the apprenticeship has allowed me to achieve this. [I] initially wanted to pass my degree and gain a 2:1, however, due to the course, I was able to surpass this goal and achieve first class honours.

I feel that by applying my newly attained professional knowledge and skills, I have a different style of management and believe that I am a more effective leader.
Embodying the values of CMI has allowed me to demonstrate integrity and effective leadership skills. I have also developed in confidence, resilience and I’m much more agile, resulting in being more creative and innovative within my role.

The University of Bolton has exceeded my expectations.
The facilities are fantastic, with up-to-date laboratories creating an engaging environment, conducive to learning.
Teaching staff deliver interesting lectures, backed up with 'real life' anecdotal evidence.

My time on placement so far has been great! We’ve completed different tasks such as: engaging with other agencies, running our own groups, meeting service users on campus and experiencing supervision. I have learnt a lot up until now and only just realised how many phone calls or emails social workers must make to chase something up. It also helps massively with our tutors on campus offering us support when needed. I’m looking forward to tackling new challenges and roles on placement andbuild on my experience.

Undertaking the apprenticeship degree has enabled me to develop both personally and professionally. Engaging and sharing experience with colleagues on the course has enabled me to take a different view on similar scenarios within my own role, enabling me to be more dynamic in how I approach problems. The work life balance is tough, and that shouldn’t be underestimated, but the rewards are well worth it. One of the most valuable aspects is mixing with people from all sectors and industries. The challenges we see have breadth and depth, and how we approach them is so varied!

Frequently Asked Questions
Degree Apprenticeships combine working with part-time study. Apprentices are employed throughout the programme and spend part of their time at university and the rest with their Employer.
Apprenticeships can last from 2 to 5 years depending on the level of the Apprenticeship.
It allows you to earn as you learn, all while taking on no personal debt for school fees. Your education is paid for by ESFA, your employer, the university and/or the Levy.
You will earn at least the National Minimum Wage rate.
A crucial part of any apprenticeship entails allocating ample time for the learning of new knowledge, skills and behaviours. Currently, this is no less than 6 hours per week throughout the apprenticeship programme’s duration. However, higher-level apprenticeships are very intense and require a large amount of study so may take more.
Your Off The Job (OTJ) training might include face-to-face delivery (e.g. lectures/ training sessions), role-playing/simulation exercises, distance/online learning, 1:1 coaching, shadowing and mentoring, industry visits/manufacturer training, participation in competitions, assignments and projects or supported study days.
Yes, the End Point Assessment (EPA) is the final stage of an Apprenticeship. It is an impartial assessment of whether or not you have developed the skills, knowledge and behaviours outlined in the apprenticeship standard.
You should always talk to your programme leader, tutors or employer first. However, Bolton Students’ Union has an independent Advice Unit based within the Students’ Union Office. The Advice Unit offers free, impartial and confidential advice to all University of Bolton students on academic issues, money concerns, problems with accommodation and more. To arrange a chat, email info@boltonsu.com.
Yes, existing staff with job roles that match the target Apprenticeship standard can undertake an Apprenticeship programme. If you would like more information on how to talk to your employer about this, contact our team at apprentices@bolton.ac.uk.
