University of Bolton Honors Chief Coroner Thomas Teague KC and Professor Christopher Dorries with Honorary Doctorates in Law

The ceremony, a celebration of academic achievement and outstanding contributions to the field of law, saw Chief Coroner Thomas Teague KC and Professor Christopher Dorries awarded honorary doctorates in law for their exceptional dedication and impactful contributions.

Professor Christopher Dorries was honored with a Doctor of Laws degree in acknowledgment of his outstanding commitment to the field of Coroners and the Coronial Service. With a distinguished career spanning decades, Professor Dorries has made significant strides as a leading solicitor, author, and lecturer. His influence became evident in 1991 when he took on the role of HM Coroner for South Yorkshire (West), managing a staggering 3,500 reported cases and 600 inquests annually. Beyond his professional responsibilities, Professor Dorries has dedicated over 30 years to educating others through lectures. His recent collaboration with the University of Bolton has solidified his role as a Visiting Professor at the Centre for Contemporary Coronial Law, cementing his impact on the future of the field.

His Honour Judge Thomas Teague KC, the Chief Coroner of England and Wales, received the Doctor of Laws distinction for his exceptional contributions to the realm of Law. Born in Weymouth in 1954, Judge Teague's educational journey took him through St Francis Xavier's College in Liverpool and Christ's College, Cambridge. A momentous point in his career occurred in 2000 when he was appointed a Queen's Counsel. His service as a Legal Assessor to the General Medical Council from 2002 to 2006 showcased his dedication to ethical legal practice. His appointment as a Circuit Judge in 2006 led to a period between 2016 and 2019 when he chaired the independent public inquiry into the death of Anthony Grainger. His most recent appointment as Chief Coroner in 2020 highlighted his role in providing unwavering support, leadership, and guidance to coroners across England and Wales, along with his crucial involvement in coroner appointments.
